Goodwin of Tyner, a senior at Wake Forest College was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, national honorary fraternity. There Was 7,162 babies born in North Carolina for the month of Jan., 1942. The last obstacle was removed in the way of hard surfacing 3.6 miles of Rocky Hock Road. The new right of-way went through part of W. E. Bunch’s farm. Fire chief, R. K. Hall explained the methods in 1 fighting fire bombs. Mrs. Roland P. Vaughan and Miss Gladysteen Hester acted as instructors to the Red Cross home nursing classes. Thirty-two persons served time in jail during month of February. It was reported that 186 animals were treated for 67 fanners at the house and mule clinics. Congressman, Herbert Bonner sent the high school a set of agriculture year books. 35 YEARS AGO 1947 W. P. Jones announced he had sold his interest in the Chowan Motor Company. Mr. Jones said he would now donate his time to the peanut processing business. The Edenton Hospital was completed. Six Edenton Boy Scouts held the Rotary Club program. Francis Hicks, Billy Gardner, Charles Overman, Philip McMullan, John Wood and Jimmy Earnhardt made up the *: patrol. Kathryn Brown was stationed in Bermuda where she was employed by the Navy Department. The mayor of Windsor sent his thanks to Edenton for the use of their fire truck. 20 YEARS AGO 1962 The senior class of Chowan High School sponsored their annual homecoming Feb. 23. The queen was Miss Gay Morris. The court attendants were: Margie Hollowell, Jane Bass, Sandra Byrum, Judy Bass, and Miss Cheryl Monds. John Glenn orbited the earth three times. Mrs. W.J.P. Earnhardt was named Edenton’s ,\ “Woman of the Year” at the Bosses’ Night banquet. E. L. Hollowell of Chowan Veneer Company spent t some time in Washington ' D.C. to attend joint meetings of Hardwood Plywood Institute and Veneer Manufacturers. 15 YEARS AGO 1967 Leo Katkaveck filed to succeed himself as coun cilman for the second ward in the May municipal election. The North Edenton £ Branch of Peoples Bank and , Trudt Co., opened at the corner of N. Brood and Hicks St. Mrs. C. W. Williams displayed his marine oil paintings at the Shepard- Pruden Memorial Library. The Daisy opened in Edenton. Another successful Hospital Auxiliary Ball was again staged at the Chowan Golf and Country Club. The ballroom was elaborately decorated along the theme “Butterflies Are Free.” Mrs. L. F. Amburn, Jr. and John Smith were in charge of decorations. 5 YEARS AGO 1977 The $ 1.8-million federal grant was announced for the Chowan Courthouse - Jail project. W. T.
