Cost of production will be | an important consideration I in the production of all crops i this year. The wise use of I fertilizer nitrogen can be an important start in keeping \ these costs down. Since most introgen is | derived from ammonia, it is easy to see that fertilizer I nitrogen cost is closely related to ammonia production cost and, since | ammonia is produced from I natural gas, it is also tied in with trends in natural gas 1 cost. The timing of natural I gas price control, which will . decontrol natural gas ■ pricing in interstate marketing by 1985, will have a dramatic impact on prices paid by U.S. producers for natural gas used in am monia production. These > facts pretty much assure the increase in nitrogen cost in the near future. More money is spent for nitrogen than for phosphorous and potash combined. Since about 54 per cent of the total nitrogen used in North Carolina is applied to corn, the efficient use of nitrogen on this crop is most important. There are several methods for applying nitrogen to corn. In addition to what is provided in the complete fertilizer, the remainder needed can be broadcast prior to or just Students Assist Heart Fund Drive Out of the goodness of their hearts, young students from D. F. Walker and Ernest A. Swain Elementary Schools will support the Heart Association’s annual drive to raise funds for this organization’s worthy causes. Sponsored by these schools, a Jump-a-Thon will be held from 9 A.M. to 12 P.M. on March 6 in the D. F. Walker gymnasium. Prior to the time when students will literally “jump rope for hearts,” they will be can vassing neighborhoods soliciting individual sponsor pledges. The individual sponsor will determine the amount he wishes to pledge for each minute of time the student is able to jump rope. Six students will be on a team with one member jumping at all times. School coordinators for the co sponsored event are Mrs. Dianne Germanero, Mrs. Bettie Bembry and Mrs. Gail Bunch, plus their assistants. A “kick-off” show held at D. F. Walker and Ernest A. Swain schools last Friday proved to be a fantastic motivator for stimulating students’ enthusiasm for participating in the Jump-a thon. With lively music to back them up, several groups of students showed off their rope jumping skills, displaying fancy footwork and intricate floor patterns while continuing to jump. Roller skate jumping was particularly popular with the audience. The en tertained audiences responded by applauding spontaneously and generously. ,At Swain School a “Jump Off’ was held at each grade level, with winning cer tificates presented to the fastest jumper in each grade. Winners at each grade level were: Donita Monroe, 4th; Tina Boyce, sth and Denita Elliott, 6th. Not receiving certificates, but having the greatest amount of audience appeal, were the Swain School staff members who won the hearts of students by displaying their great sportsmanship, with an extemporaneous jumping exhibition. Everyone stands to win by supporting the Jump-a thon: sponsors win by contributing to the Heart Fund and supporting student efforts at raising these funds; every par ticipating jumper will receive a pen and heart patch. Teams raising bet ween $25 and $99 in pledges will receive a Heart “T” Continued On Pog* 10-A after planting. Although this is the most convenient method of application there is a greater possibility of leaching or denitrification loses of nitrogen, especially during the first five weeks when corn takes up a relatively small amount of nitrogen. The use of several nitrification inhibitors can slow down the process of denitrification if applied properly on non-organic soils and will partially protect from leaching on sandy soils. Their benefit will be most likely if op timum growth factors such as sufficient soil moisture, adequate pest management, adapted variety, proper soil pH, sufficient nutrients Display Set WILLIAMSBURG Va. - The interior of historic Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, completed in 1715, will be the setting for an unusual display of Church Floral Arts March 30-31. Seventy-eight original arrangements designed and executed by 40-50 members of the Parish will symbolize the religious seasons and enhance the Georgian architectural features of the Church, according to Bruton’s rector, The Kev. Cotesworth P. Lewis, who says the mood will be ap propriate for Lent. This unusual and significant event has been arranged in conjunction with Mary Pope, OBE, VMH,of Dorset, England, who is founder-president of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies of Great Britain. Mrs. Pope will be in Williamsburg to present a seminar on Church Floral Arts for the Williamsburg Garden Symposium, sponsored by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in association with the American Horticultural Society here on March 29. Mrs. Pope will be assisted by Margaret Keith, a for mer president of the NAFAS. Mrs. Pope’s presentation in the church will be made on March 29, for Symposium registrants. The church then will be open to the public on March 30 and on March 31 from 9 A. M. to 9 P. M. each day. There will be worship services of Evensong with special music at 7 P. M. on Tuesday and Eucharist at 11 A. M. on Wednesday. In addition an 8 P. M. Choral Concert is scheduled on Wednesday. The public is invited to the Church for all events on March 30 and 31. Broad St. Ext other than nitrogen and moderate nitrogen use are prevalent. The benefit of these materials will depend on soil type, time and rate of nitrogen application, and weather conditions between the time nitrogen is applied and absorbed by the crop. Another approach to nitrogen fertilization of corn is to apply a small amount of nitrogen at planting time and the remainder as a sidedressing when the com is knee high. This minimizes leaching losses but makes nitrogen available when #/ H FORDS FOR SPRING New Series 10 tractors equipped with four-cylinder engines offer a new center-drive, front wheel-drive option that increases ground clearance by three inches and reduces the tractor’s turning radius by nearly four feet, compared to previous models with a side-drive system. The new models also feature major engine, tran smission and hydraulic system improvements. Ford tractor dealers will introduce the new mid-range models this spring. Series 10 is the cornerstone of a worldwide product program to improve Ford's tractor sales and market share during the 1980’s tractor sales and market share during the 1980’s and is being introduced on the 75th anniversary of the first Ford farm tractor - an experimental model built by the com pany’s founder in 1907. Also, any adjustments in rates due to stand loss or leaching and the use of a layby herbicide can be best made at this time. Efficient use of nitrogen was not so critical when prices were lower, but with the increases in price, greater attention must be given to efficient use, not only to ensure that the crop is produced economically but to ensure that excessive amounts are not leaching into ground water.
