The Chowan Herald SECTION B The Carolina Review: Reagan’s Economic Plan A Major Concern Fire ... Delcaring that the “national economic house is on fire,” Gov. Jim Hunt last week unloosed new criticisms of President Ronald Reagan’s economic plans for the country. Ex pressing previously private concerns about the Reagan budget, Hunt said the budget is “not just the wrong economic strategy, but is ignoring the economy.” Press spokesman Brent Hackney said the governor feels that “by sending a budget to Congress that can’t possibly work, he (Reagan) is in effect saying that the ball is in your (Congress’) court.” That indicates to the governor that “there is no leadership,” according to Hackney. But aren’t these criticisms a new stance for the governor, who previously was very careful about criticizing an ob viously popular Ronald Reagan? C. A \ * Edenton, North Carolina, Thursday, March 4, 1982 “No doubt about it,” says Hackney. So then, the next question, “Is Hunt postering for his expected run against close Reagan ally Sen. Jesse Helms in 1984?” “I don’t think that has anything to do with it,” said Hackney. “Lodi, we’ve got unemployment in this state creeping toward ten per cent and the interest rates are already sky high. People can’t even buy a house.” “Really, with all that, what do you expect?” asks Hackney. Most people expect the hottest political showdown this state has ever witnessed when Hunt and Helms have at it in the 1984 race. Jobless... Hackney wasn’t far off base when he cited unemployment “creeping toward 10 per cent." The N.C. Employment Security commission reported last week that North Carolina unemployment in January had soared to 9.1 per cent - the highest level since the worst of the 1974-75 recession. The unemployment rate in December of 1981 was 6.8 per cent, somewhat below the national average for that month of 8.3 per cent. But the January 9.1 per cent is right up there with the nation’s 9.4 per cent. According to ESC of ficials, practically every industry in the employment survey showed a decline in the number of workers in January. Yet, in a statistical quirk that most people have to accept rather than un derstand, the number of workers in the state was up 1.3 per cent from the numbers in December, 1981. The ESC said it was too early to tell if the high unemployment rates were artifically raised by weather-related layoffs or other factors not related to the economy. February figures will tell that tale. Pro Tem ... Sen. Craig Lawing, D-Mecklenburg, months ago wrapped up commitments for an un precedented third two-year term as president pro tem of the N. C. Senate in 1983. The ease with which he ac complished the feat suggested widespraad acceptance in the Senate over the matter. But events during the recent redistricting mini-session Revival Planned For Spring Rocky Hock Baptist Church will be having their spring revival March 14-19, in conjunction with the “Here’s Hope” Joint Evangelistic Crusade of the Baptist State Convention and the General Baptist Convention. Baptist chur ches across the state will be involved in an intensive revival-evangelism effort during March and April. These simultaneous revivals are a part of the Bold Mission Thrust of the two Baptist Conventions, whereby it is hoped that every person in the world will be reached with the gospel by the year 2000. The revival evangelist will be S. Lawrence Childs, Director of Missions for the Mecklenburg Baptist Association, Charlotte. Services will begin Sunday morning at 11 A.M., and be held Sunday through Friday evenings at 7:30 P.M. The public is cordially invited to attend. A nursery will be provided. suggest differently. According to one senator, who insisted on anonymity, “There is a lot of ill feeling in the Senate about the third term. It caused a lot of bad feelings. He (Lawing) got the early commitments for a third term because everybody assumed there was a relationship between Lawing and Green - when in reality, the lieutenant governor wanted somebody who could be in Raleigh more and help out with some of the work.” Sen. Melvin Daniels, D- Pasquotank, had publicly expressed doubts about Lawing holding a third term, but no one publicly joined him. The anonymous senator agreed. “The consensus is IN OLDS TODAY CASH BONUS ON Ml NEW OMEGAS, FIRENZAS AND CUTLASS CIERAS! At the most, two terms. And definitely not three terms. The simple fact is that the pro tem has a lot of work to do in Raleigh ... almost fulltime service for the two years,” he said. Taking the game of ad vance commitments a little further, Sen. R. C. Soles, D- Columbus, apparently locked up the pro tem nomination for 1985 on the last day of the redistricting session. By mid-afternoon, he had 26 of 40 Democratic senators committed to vote for him in 1985, though some probably won’t be around in ’BS to vote their com mitment - even assuming Soles can get himself twice re-elected. N.C. Marine Fisheries Meeting Held The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission at a February 24 meeting amended a gill net regulation in the Roanoke River, passed a resolution opposing a proposed U.S. Coast Guard user-pay program, and passed another resolution recommending changes in water quality standards to more adequately protect coastal waters, according to Jerry Gaskill, Commission Chairman. Stationary or fixed gill nets with a stretched mesh less than three inches can now be used from April 1 to May 31 from the mouth of Roanoke River to U.S. 258 bridge. The comission passed a resolution opposing a program being considered by the U. S. Department of Transportation for the U.S. Coast Guard. The proposed user-pay program implies a minimal annual fee of $1,350 for every commercial fishing vessel. The Com mission believes it would have a catastrophic impact on commercial fishermen of all walks. The commission passed a motion to support North Carolina Office of Coastal Management and North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries recommendations to the Environmental Management Commission Sailing Club Held Meeting On February 25th the Edenton Sailing Club held its organizational meeting at Holmes High School. Commodore. Mrs Christine Schock was elected Vice-Commodore of the Senior Division. The Senior Division consists past the 12th grade. Mrs. Martha Hamer was elected Secretary treasurer.
