Nightingale:
Emergency Air Service

Nightingale, the emergency
air ambulance service
provided by Medical Center
Hospitals, was formally
dedicated February so at 2
Ml. ceremonies at Norfolk
General Hospital’s helipad.
Tfie service officially began
operation at 7 All. on
Thursday, Feb. 25.
Rep. G. William
Whitehurst of the Second
Congressional District
served as keynote speaker
at the ceremonies.
"Nightingale is one more
positive step toward im
proving the health care of
the citizens of this region,”
Whitehurst said, adding that
"some of us may owe our
UVes to the people who
helped bring this service to
our community.”

Nightingale "the result of
ten years of combined ef
forts to provide this region
with an emergency air
ambulance service.”
“At the state level, we
have been very concerned
for some time about what
medical air transport can do
to save lives. There is no
doubt that the people of
southeastern Virginia and
Northeastern North
Carolina are very fortunate
to have the Nightingale
service,” McHenry said.
The Nightingale aircraft,
a Bell Long-Ranger II
helicopter capable of
carrying two patients, two
medical crewmembers and
a pilot, was on display at the
helipad.
Nightingale is the first
hospital-based emergency
air transport service in
eastern Virginia and north
east North Carolina.
It is based at Norfolk
General Hospital and will
augment existing ground
ambulance systems within a
125-mile radius of this base,

facilities in the area and all
existing referral patterns
will be honored.

proven effective at saving
lives in other parts of the

According to Holmes,
there are presently some 35
emergency sir transport
systems operating in the
United States. Two years
ago, when Medical Center
Hospitals began to study the
feasibility of such a system,
there were only IS.
“Air ambulances save
Uvea, and it is this simple
fact which prompted us to
develop an air transport
service,” Holmes said.
Holmes said that a key
benefit of the service is the
speed with which accident
victims can receive definite
treatment and be moved to
an emergency medical
center. Speed and the
presence of proper medical
care are also crucial factors
in transferring critically ill
patients from one hospital to
another.
The Nightingale service
can reduce land transport
time by 60 to 70 per cent. The
helicopter can lift off within
three to five minutes of
dispatch and has a cruising
speed of 130 miles per hour.
Subject only to extreme
weather conditions, the
service will be available 24
hours a day, 365 days a year.
Medical Center Hospitals
is leasing the helicopter
from Chesapeake &
Potomac Airways, Inc., of
Baltimore, Md., a member
of the Omniflight Group.
The leasing arrrangement
provides for the services of
three pilots and a mechanic
as well as the helicopter,
which has been specially
equipped with all the critical
care equipment, drugs and
medical supplies necessary
to administer advanced life
support at accident scenes
and enroute to receiving
hospitals.
One flight nurse, one
Paramedic and one pilot
will be on duty at the Nor
folk General helipad at all
times and will be on board
during each airlift.
“All flight nurses have
completed a rigorous
training program of
emergency and critical care
nursing, both on-the-scene
and in-flight,” said Connie
N. Schneider, R. M., chief
flight nurse who is
responsible for Nightingale
training programs.

power and chemical
recovery department.
The new hogged fuel
boiler, which is desfeied to
use wood waste and other
alternate fuels, is about half
completed now. It is
scheduled to come on line in
August. The latest state-of
the-art cleaning equipment
a third generation dry
scrubber and a new stack
towering 250 feet in the air is
being constructed for the
boiler now, also.
When this project is
completed, die two hogged
fuel boilers at Plymouth will
be using 1800 tons a day of
bark, sawdust and other
waste wood to generate
power and steam for mill
operations. This will save
millions on the price of foel
oil, make good use of a
former solid waste, and help
make Weyerhaeuser in
dependent of imported oil
supplies. That means
greater long-term job
security for mill employees.

year, more than 80,000
North Carolina taxpayers
claimed the residential
energy tax credit on their
Federal income tax returns,
substantially reducing
their tax bill, the Internal
Revenue Service said.
The credit is based on 15
per cent of the first $2,000 of
allowable expenses, to a
maximum of S3OO credit.
Allowable expenses are the
cost of insulation, storm
doors and windows,
weatherstripping, caulking
and replacement burners on
furnaces that conserve
fuel.
A more lucrative credit is
allowed for expenses in
curred in installing solar,
wind, and geothermal
energy units in a residence.
The credit is 40 per cent of
the first SIO,OOO of expenses,
or a $4,000 maximum credit.
Both credits may be used
only to reduce a tax liability,
not to increase a refund. A
taxpayer may carry over
any unused credit to the
next tax year, or through
1967, the IRS said.

never to reopen, due to die

recession.
As pulp, paper and
paperboard markets con
tinue to soften and prices
continue to drop for the
