Around The County Farms By Mike Williams County Extension Chrmn. The continued wet weather has led many farmers to wonder iust what to do about fertilizer and herbicide annlication on small grains. This is the time of year for topdressing with nitrogen and can mean the difference between a high yield and a low one. Nitrogen promotes tillering, insures a large number of heads, gives more keraals per head, more weight per keraal, and is generally applied at the rate of 80 -100 pounds per acre during mid to late February. The time of application can depend a great deal on the weather. The cooler it has been the later ap plications can be delayed. In general, yields are not decreased when nitrogen is applied through the last week in March. The up and down temperatures we have experienced should put us well within this time limit and hopefully the ground will dry out enough to get the job done. Some growers have already started to apply nitrogen by having it ap plied by plane. This is an effective and more ex pensive way to get the job done, but it should be kept in mind that there is a chance of losing much of the applied nitrogen to denitrification because of the continued wet field conditions. If aerial application is your choice, large nozzles should be used to form large droplets. Ammonium nitrate is the better choice of materials since there is less chance of losing it to denitrification. Herbicides are often applied to small grain in combination with top dressed nitrogen when a sprayer giving uniform coverage is used. Small grains are treated in the fully tillered stage and before the plant begins to joint. This is when the grain is 4 to 8 indies tall, has numerous shoots and is generally where our grains are now and should still be for the next couple of weeks. In summary, we still have time to let the fields dry out (if the rain stops) and apply fertilizer and herbicides to small grain without a related decrease in yield. Trying to go ahead while it is too wet will result in loss of nitrogen due to denitrification in addition to rutting and damage to soil structure and no till planting difficulties later in the season. Be sure to use your soil test to determine your fertilizer needs and, if you have questions concerning small grains or any other situation, call us at the Agricultural Extension Office, 482 - 8431.
