Edentata, Mrs. Mary Gray

Annie Macon Perkins of
Deerfield, 111.; three
nephews: William T. Sat
terfidd of Columbia, N.C.,
Robert Satterfield of Ft.
Myers, Fla., and Charles E.
Satterfield of Philadelphia,
Pa.; and several great
nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be
held at 2 P.M. today
(Thursday) hy Dr. John
Allen at the Williford-
Barham Funeral Chapel,
with burial following at
Beaver Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Steve
Leary, Gary Satterfield,
Bobby Hutchison, Jesse
Hughes, Willie Lee Brabble
and Jim Ervin. Williford-
Barham funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

Hill Street, Suffolk, died
March 10 in a hospital.
A native of Gates County
he was a retired farmer and
the husband of Mrs.
Florence Duck Nixon.
Survivors include a son:
Johnny Frank Nixon of
Edenton; six step
daughters: Mary Asbell of
Portsmouth; Mrs. James G.
Upton; Elizabeth Carpenter
and Frances Mathias, all of
Suffolk; Betty Crumpler of
Petersburg and Stella
Daniels of Hertford; two
step-sons: King S. Car
penter of Providence, R.1.,
and Lawrence Carpenter of
Suffolk; and two sisters:
Marie Bryant of Richmond
and Inez McCoy of Ports
mouth.
A funeral service was held
March 13 at 2 P.M. in R. W.
Funeral Home by Rev.
T. A. Powell. Burial was in
the White Family Cemetery,
Route 2, Hertford.

Amanda Brook Lane, 14
months old, died March 13 at
Kings Daughters Hospital in
Norfolk, Va. She was the
daughter of Tony L. and
Brenda Harrell Lane of
Edenton.
Besides her parents, she is
survived by her maternal
grandparents John L. and
Catherine Harrell, Jr. of
Edenton; her maternal
great-grandfather, J.
Lonnie Harrell, Sr. of
Edenton; her paternal
grandparents, Lynden H.
and Lillian H. Lane of
Tyner; her paternal great
grandmother, Mrs. Emily
D. Lane of Tyner; her
parernal great
grandparents, Robert and
Nellie Harrell of New Hope,
N.C.; and two brothers,
Tony L. Lane, Jr. and Derek
C. Lane.
Funeral services were
held March 15 at 4 P.M. by
Roy Long. Burial followed
at Beaver Hill Cemetery.
Williford-Barham Funeral
Home was in charge of
arrangements.

VIRGINIA BEACH -
John I. Miller, 66, of 616
Aragona Blvd. died last
Wednesday in a hospital.
A native of Edenton, N.C.,
he had lived in Tidewater
for 25 years and was a
retired self - employed
construction worker. He
was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife,
Edith C. Miller; three
daughters, Peggy Russ of
Ocala, Fla., Jean Kimball of
Virginia Beach and
Patricia King of Suffolk;
two sons, William R. Miller
of Tampa, Fla., and John W.
Miller of Virginia Beach; a
sister, Gladys Arnold of
Edenton; a brother, Early
Miller of Chesapeake; 13
grandchildren; and three
great - grandchildren.
Afuneral was held a 2
P.M. last Friday in Kellum
Funeral Home Chapel by
the Rev. George Insley
Burial was in Rosewood
Memorial Park.

Bottle Drive Is Planned
The Chowan Edenton
Optimist Club will conduct a
bottle drive this Saturday
morning from 9 o’clock until
1 P.M. to raise money to
support the Second Chowan
County Special Olympics.
Members and their
children will contact area
residents to donate return
able soft drinks bottles to
the club. These bottles will
be sold to the companies
that filled them originally
and the proceeds will go
toward providing T-shirts
for the Special Olympics
competitors and other youth
related community
projects.

Seminar On
Watercdors
June 7-11
A Watercolor Seminar,
hosted by Ralph Smith, will
be held in Edenton from
June 7-11. Smith, who is a
California native, has
studied at Arts and Crafts,
and The Art Center in
California; American
University in Washington,
D. C.; advanced oil painting
and portraiture with Marcos
Blahove and Antonios L.
Karaf yllakis; watercolor
painting with William F.
Walter and Edgar Whitney;
and at the Rangemark
Master Watercolor Classes
under Barse Miller, Edward
Betts, and Chen Chi.
Smith has also won exhibit
awards at the Dakota
National Open in South
Dakota; the Ogunquit Art
Center in Maine; Academic
Artists in Massachusetts;
the Owensboro Museum of
Fine Art; the Kentucky
Watercolor Society and the
Virginia Watercolor
Society.
The five-day seminar is
structured for beginners,
intermediate and advanced
students to achieve
professional quality in their
watercolor paintings. The
seminars will stress the
fundamentals of com
position, values, color and
techniques, with painting
demonstrations and daily
critiques by the instructor.
The weekly seminar, which
is limited to about twenty
students, has a prerequisite
of basic drawing ad per
spective with a minimum of
one year in the basic han
dling of the watercolor
medium.
The many historical home
in Edenton will be the major
subject in the paintings.
Course cost is SIOO, with a
minimum of S4O required to
register for each seminar
location. If anyone wishes to
obtain more information,

merce building in Edenton.

Hamby To Address Group
Mrs. Judy Hamby, a
member of the Board of
Directors for the Georgia
Division, Inc., American
Cancer Society, will be a
guest of the Baptist Women
of Edenton Baptist Church
and the Chowan County
Chapter of the American
Cancer Society on March 22
at 10 A.M. in the sanctuary
of Edenton Baptist Church.
For the past two years,
Mrs.' Hamby has traveled
the nation in a speech giving
capacity. She is the state
chairman of the recently
organized Youth Against
Cancer program in Georgia.
Mrs. Hamby, a native of
Georgia, attended Georgia
Southern College,
graduating with honors and
receiving her Masters in
English. She recently
received her Ph.D. in
English from Emory
University. She is listed
among the college Who’s
Who in American Colleges
and University’s list and is
also a forma: beauty title
holder.
She was a Southeastern
press correspondent in the
Atlanta Bureau for the
Oriental Supper
An Oriental Supper with
slides and talk of China will
take place March 25 at 6
P.M. at First Presbyterian
Church in Edenton. Dr. and
Mrs. H. E. Mallinson will
host the meal and give their
impressions, with slides of
their trip to China this past
November. Due to the kind
of program, reservations
are required. Forty places
are available. Each family
unit is requested to bring an
Oriental dish that will be
shared with others. If you
