Tfarafay.Agin. hk Letter To The Editor To the Editor: , The only medical treat ment possible for nuclear holocaust is prevention. There can be no informed or rational dispute on this matter. Yet we have a Dpt. Secretary of Defense named T. K. Jones who states to the press that “80 v per cent of Americans will survive an all-out nuclear war” (that means only 40 or 50-million people dead, and that is a gross un derestimation in the face of medical and biologic facts). The deputy secretary goes on to reassure us that our society will be back to “normal” in 2-4 years. He recommends that everyone just get a shovel, dig a hole in the (pound and wait “for the radiation to disappear.” The absurdity of this is beyond belief. The simple fact is that you cannot live with your bone marrow destroyed by radiation; you die a death similar to end stage leukemia, within days to a few weeks. The massive radioactive fallout, which will circle the earth and rain down into all our water, soil and food, for years to come, will cause cancers, in fections, birth defects, if : there are any survivors left [that long. : So, is Mr. Jones’ : statement a deliberate lie to i the American people or is it - - perhaps more frightening - :- pure ignorance and [stupidity, or just an honest mistake? I don’t pretend to know, but I sure am scared [when a high official of our : government talks like that. ; (And I wonder how this attitude makes the Russians : fed about America’s in dentions to be peacelike.) Up to now, an estimated 95 I per cent of Americans have .never told their elected representatives or President how they fed on this issue or any other. Now is the time for us to say what we think about spending sl -a day every day (a recent estimate calculated from the newest budget of the ad ministration) on a massive S“defense” buildup that points to our ultimate destruction. We need defense, not suicide. We need sound, intelligent ; diplomacy, not thousands of ■ bombs so horrendous that no • human can truly com prehend their effects (some ; are equal to 1,000 Hiroshima bombs), or deadly nerve gas that suffocates people to death, depending on where the wind blows it, or lethal : germs and viruses that can t I Here’s Some Tax Free Interest From Uncle Sam! May God defend us from our own “defense”, because no human force will be able to defend us in the aftermath of using it! For those who care enough to use our precious American right of free speech, express your own opinion to our elected people in Washington. All that’s needed are simple short messages. It’s not how fancy or how long a note or phone message - but how many on each side of a question. If there are 100 to 200 million Americans who don’t want to die in nuclear horror, and say so, our own elected leaders might just listen! I am sure they do care, because life pertains to all of us, and so does death, no matter how deep one’s bomb shelter. The addresses of our people in Congress are as follows: Sen. Jones, House Office Building, Washington D. C. 20615, phone (202) 225-3101. If we haven’t personally expressed our views, we don’t have too much right to complain about the mess we’re in.
