State High way Patrol is preparing for increased travel on the highways. “Easter will be the first opportunity for most families to enjoy a long weekend after a very confining winter, and the Patrol plans to make the highways as safe as possible for their travel,” Patrol Commander Colonel John Jenkins said. Jenkins noted that ex cessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol are the leading causes of accidents on holidays as well as during other times of the year. “These two violations constantly cause a disproportionate number of accidents; and with the increase of vehicles on the roads during holidays, their involvement is even more prevalent,” Jenkins said. He pointed out that the Patrol will be using radar and other speed - timing devices on as many high ways as possible during the long holiday weekend. “Troopers will also be con centrating on the detection and apprehension of every alcohol - influenced driver possible,” Jenkins said. The Patrol is obligated to protect the motoring public from these dangerous drivers, and we {dan to do just that,” he concluded. The holiday period will begin at 6 P.M. April 9 and end at midnight April 12. According to figures released by the Patrol, 11 ; people died on the highways during the Easter holiday period last year -a reduction of 12 compared to the previous year.
