Until 6 p.m. By Phone 482-3221 L Community Shows Gfireat Support For Area Special Olympics March 27 was a monu mental . occasion for _QQ “Special People” as they competed for recognition in their community. The Chowan-Edenton Optimist Club sponsored Chowan County’s second annual Special Olympics at Hicks Field in Edenton with support from throughout the Albemarle area. Special Olympics coordinator Mrs. Betsy Kelly termed the day’s events as a “huge success” and expressed gratitude for all who sup ported the games with manpower of financial contributions. The Special Olympics began at 10 A.M. with a parade of athletes led by the John A. Holmes High School Marching Aces band, directed by Otis Strother. Following the parade, speeches were presented by several community leaders. Edenton Mayor Roy Harrell commended the athletes for their perserverance and dedication. D. F. Walker Principal Ralph Cole challenged the athletes to achieve their goals through building themselves to be strong competitors. Macedonia Baptist Church Rev. Charles Harris praised the athletes for their spirit of hope and peace as they fulfilled their ambitions. Mrs. Betsy Kelly welcomed THE CHOWAN HERALD all the athletes, their sup port groups, and the audience as the games began. There were six groups of children broken into age barriers. Different area civic organizations led their group of children through the six different events. The following organizations performed dedicated ser vices throughout the Olympics: the Chowan- Edenton Optimist Club, the Edenton Jaycees, the Edenton Jaycettes, the Center Hill-Ccrossroads Fire Dept., the Advance Ruritan Club, the Edenton Sweetheart Club, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Auxiliary, Boy Scout Troop 172 and the Chowan-Edenton Rescue Squad. The events of the day were the standing broad jump, the 200 meter race, the frisbee throw for distance, the 400 meter race, the softball throw for distance and the 50 yard dash. Each event was patterned after criteria established by the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation, who began the Special Olympics program in 1968. Blankenhom for the Easter Sunday worship service at 11 A.M. on April 11, at the Edenton United Methodist Church. The text for this message is John 20:9. The choir will present two Easter anthems during the worship service. The Sanctuary Building Committee will meet at the church at 7:30 P.M., April 12. A new Children’s Choir (grades 2-6), under the direction of Mrs. Esther Crisanti, will begin rehearsal on April 13,7 - 7:30 P.M. at the church. • United-- 'Methodist Women’s Circles will meet next week as follows: The Mary-Martha Circle will meet with Mrs. Emily Ambum at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, April 12; the Susanna Wesley Circle will meet at 8 P.M. on April 12 with Mrs. Joanie White; and the Afternoon Circle will meet Tuesday, April 13, 3 P.M. in the church library. designed to allow handicapped and mentally retarded young people to compete in local, regional, state and national events to improve their outlook on life and improve their opinions of themselves. The meaning of sports competition in the truest sense of the word is con veyed through the Special Olympics oath, “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt. At the closing of the event, State Trooper Mike McArthur, President of the Optimist Club, thanked all participants at the event and recognized several of the competitors for their outstanding ac complishments of the day. Trooper McArthur’s daughter, Jenny, led the crowd of 300 in singing Happy Birthday to Kathy Bonner, who had competed to her maximum ability throughout the day. The Optimist Club thanked each group who served in a leadership capacity during the day. WCDJ Radio station manager Terry Williams provided live coverage of the games and Mrs. Anne Dail of WCDJ posed as a clown to spirit the athletes on to greater achievements. Bond, a five year employee with Electrolux working out from Williamston, branch office, won top honors by selling 537 Electrolux Vacuum Cleaner units during 1981. Bond also won the honor to attend a trip to the World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee, and a seven day trip to London and Ireland. Car-Banging The Edenton Church Os God Young People are sponsoring a car-banging and concession stand. It will be held at Northside Shopping Center April 10 starting at 9:30 A.M.
