Morrow is elated over the volunteer spirit displayed by North Carolina citizens during the recent drive to distribute more than one million pounds of U.S. Department of Agriculture surplus cheese to over 500,000 low - income persons in all 100 counties of the state. “This has to be one of our largest volunteer efforts in North Carolina,” Dr. Morrow said. “Based on information from across the state, thousands of citizens of all ages representing churches, schools, civic and business organizations rolled up their sleeves to help county social services departments deliver the surplus cheese to needy familities.” Dr. Morrow cited the surplus cheese project as an excellent example of what volunteers can achieve in assisting state government to serve the people of ftorth Carolina. “Governor Hunt’s administration has put a strong emphasis on volunteerism because the more people who care and become involved, the more we can accomplish. Governor Hunt practices what he preaches by taking time out from his busy schedule each week to serve as a volunteer tutor in the Wake County schools.” “On behalf of the Governor and the Depart ment of Human Resources, I would like to simply say a heartfelt thank you to the thousands of volunteers who lent a helping hand to ensure that this nutritious cheese was served on the dinner tables of hungry families.” Dr. Morrow concluded by stating that “the volunteer tradition of people helping has never been more im portant than it is today. Volunteerism in North Carolina is making it possible to continue quality people programs - even with severe budget cuts.” Dip For Dogs SNOW HILL, N.C. - A North Carolina firm has been the first approved by EPA to market a dip for dogs containing an ingredient that’s been used for years on sheep and cattle in Australia. Happy Jack, Inc. of Snow Hill, N.C. spent two years and approximately $50,000 to obtain approval for the manufacture and sale of the new dip that protects canines against fleas, ticks —and mange mites. But, they seldom have to complain about the food shortages that are so much a part of the everyday life in many countries. Here are some of the things that are often taken for granted by the average consumer: The average American family spends 16.6 percent of its disposable income on food today, well below the 17.2 percent of a decade ago or the 20 percent of two decades ago. It’s also well below the 60 to 70 percent for food in many other countries. A half century ago, we had 6V2 million farms that were operated by 13 million farmers and farm workers. Those farms averaged 145 acres. Today, we have less than 2.3 million farms, operated by 3.7 million farmers and farm workers. The farms average 450 acres. Fifty years ago, each of those 13 million in the farm work force provided food and fiber for 11 people. 24 Hr. Service Rafrlg. Each also provides jobs for 5.2 people who transport, process and merchandise the crops produced. That means American agriculture is the world’s largest commercial industry with nearly 23 million workers and assets of over $1 trillion. The United States, with less than three-tenths of 1 percent of the world’s farmers and farm workers, produces 66 percent of the world’s soybeans, 60 percent of its grapefruit, 50 percent of its corn, 31 percent of its sorghum, 30 percent of its poultry, 27 percent of the green peas, 22 percent of the beef, 22 percent of the oranges, 21 percent of the peaches, 16 percent of the tomatoes, 16 percent of the eggs, 14 percent of the wheat, and 13 percent of the world’s pork.
