April 22, 1982 American Legion Site For Junior Livestock Show Debbie Ward, 4 - H Club member from Hyland Chib won four trophies in the 1962 Chowan County Junior Livestock Show held last week at the American Legion Fair Ground. Debbie won Grand Champion Steer honors, Champion Fitting and Showmanship for Steers, Reserve Champion Individual Hog and Reserve Champion Pen of three Hogs. Darryl Stallings, FFA member at John A. Holmes High School and Garry Copeland, both 4 - H and FFA member, won two trophies each. Darryl had the Reserve Champion Steer and Champion Fitting and Showmanship for Hogs. Garry came in with both Grand Champion Individual and Grand Champion Pen of Three Hogs. Garry said, “It surely is nice to come in first in hogs after coming in near the bottom for steers a few times.” Both steers and hogs sold considerably better in the 1962 show than they did in 1961. (Nineteen eighty • one was probably the driest year on record for Chowan County farmers). All the hogs in the show last week averaged sl.Ol peh lb. This includes the hogs sold in a group. Hogs sold separately averaged $1.25 per lb. (Insvictual and top three pens of three hogs). In the show last year all hogs averaged 75 cents per lb. and individual hogs in 1981 averaged $1.06 per lb. Steers in the 1982 show averaged 91 cents while 1961 average was 09.8 cents per lb.. General comment con cerning the sale was “It certainly was better than last year.” Murray L. Goodwin, Agricultural Extension Agent said. “We are grateful for the support of the buyers this year. We has. some new buyers and that helped. The trophy donors had a medal part in the show. Probably the hardest working person at the sale was our good auctioneer Wallace Evans. Our livestock show is a team effort and we want to thank all who had a part in the team effort” The Champion Individual Hog, owned by Garry Copeland purchased by Hobbs Implement and Sun Oil Co. for $8.05 per lb. This is the second highest price ever in the Chowan County Sale. The pig had the marking of the Hampshire Duroc breed. The Steer Champion had Charlois blood and was exhibited by Debbie Ward. This meaty animal was purchased by S ft R Super Market at SI.OO per lb. The Champion Pen of Three Hogs was also bought by Mr. Roebuck for S ft R at 90 cents per lb. This entry was also entered by Garry Copeland. In the second round of the sale, the Reserve Champion Hog was bought by Rich Square Premix for $2.00 per lb. This hog was the property of Debbie Ward. The Reserve Champion Steer weighed 1200 lbs. and was bought by Farm Bureau Insurance (Jimmy Stallingsl.at 75 cents per lb. This animal had the markings of Charlosis and was exhibited by Darryl Stallings. Third place pen of hogs, Mike Pippins, bought by Albemarle Tire Company for 80 cents per lb. Fourth place steer, Mike Pippins, bought by Byrum Implement Company for 77 cents. Fifth place steer, Recreation Notes Winners Kite Flying Coolest • Cheryl McCann received a trophy for the Most Original Kite, Callie Aylesworth received the Largest Kite trophy and her brother Steven was the receipient of the Highest Flying trophy. We thank these participants and hope they will be a part of our program next year. Men’s Exercise Program - Conditioning and basic exercise classes for men will begin Monday, April 19 at 7 P.M. Classes will be held in the Recreation Department. The course is scheduled for six weeks and a fee of $5 will be charged. Anyone interested should contact Donnell Valentine at 482 - 8595. The Exercise classes are held on Tuesday mornings and the Aerobic classes are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings with a drop - in class on Saturday mornings. Adult Tennis Lessons - Tennis lessons for adults will be taught ,at the Recreation Department two evenings a week beginning May 3. Anna Goodwin won the trophy for having the Best Project Book. Anna has won this trophy several times before. The judge for the show was Robert Swain, swine specialist from Southeastern District. Ryland Ruritan club did a good job of working in the refreshment stand. Window Treatment Program Do you have problem windows ... ? Need a new lode for a special room ... ? Or, do you feel that you are losing hot (or cool) air through your windows??? If so, make plans to come to a special program on window treatments on April 26, at 2:30 or 7:30 P.M., at the Edenton Municipal Building. Frances Voliva, Tyrrell County Extension Chairman, will present the afternoon session. We will also have an opportunity to sign up for workshops on making Roman shades, draperies, etc. Plan now to attend. Kindergarten Registration Slated | Kindergarten registration for students living in the White Oak School district will be held April 29, from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. in the gymnasium at White Oak School. All children who will be five years old on or before October 16, will be eligible to attend kindergartqp when school opens next Fall. Parents are required to present a copy of the child’s birth certificate, which may be kept by the school. Parents are also required to present the child’s im i munization records. Unless parents so desire, it is not necessary to bring the potential kindergarten child to registration. However, a play area supervised by volunteers will be available while parents complete the registration process. To ensure a smooth registration, trained volunteers and Health Department nurses will be at several stations to help parents during registration. The school’s principal will also be on hand to assign buses for next year’s new studmts.
