Extortionist Is i Convicted * Phillip Leroy Twiiftql was* £ convicted by a Federal Court jury Thursday on both counts of an indictment charging him with extortion and interference with commerce by threats. Twiddy had mailed two demand letters to W. Ray White, vice president of Planters National Bank in Manteo, and his father, Stanford White of Manns Harbor, demanding $50,000 from each. The letters threatened death to both Whites and Grace White, wife of Stanford White, if the demands were not met. One letter suggested the money would be easy to get because of Ray White’s employment with the bank. The letters were followed by three threatening phone calls placed from Twiddy’s residence in Elizabeth City, to the bank and the Stanford White residence. Stanford White is a former member of the N. C. State House of Representatives and is now in retirement. Twiddy was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was responsible for conducting the investigation leading to the indictment.
