Speight, Jr., prominent North Carolina business executive and chairman since 1977 of the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, has been chosen to head the National Alcoholic Beverage Control Association, Inc. and will assume the responsibilities of that office during its annual conference, May 6- 12, in Phoenix, Ariz. Speight is the v*th state official and the first Tarhet to be elected president of the organization which represents the 18 states, North Carolina among them, that conduct liquor sales as a government operation. The NABCA also has an associate mem bership that embraces virtually all .of the nation’s leading distilleries, wineries and alcohol beverage im porters. The newly-chosen trade association chief has been a member of thß NABCA board of directors for the past five year! and his activities thert and in committees on which he served speedily won for him the reputation of being an untiring worker with an unshakable determination to get things done. The national reputation Speight earned the association he now heads embraces states from New England to the Pacific Northwest and from the deep South to the Canadian border -- matches the opinion held in many private business circles that he is the embodiment of America as the perennial land of opportunity. Fellow officials in the NABCA apr.aise him as today’s confirmation of the often disputed claim that to those who are genuinely determined to succeed there is no such thing as “no chance.” No. Os Cyclists Increasing RALEIGH With the arrival of warm weather, Highway Patrol officials today warned motorists to expect an increase in the number of motorcycles on the streets and highways. ‘‘Although many motorcyclists ride the year round, we always ex perience an influx of these vehicles during the spring and summer seasons, “Col. John Jenkins said. According to Jenkins, eight motorcyclists were killed in 148 accidents during the first two months of this year. This compares to only five deaths in 115 motorcycle accidents during the same period last year. “Motorcycles are not easily identified in traffic, and with additional cyclists taking to the roads, the likelihood of accidents will increase,” Jenkins said. Jenkins pointed out that a large number of the ac cidents are due to some motorists having difficulty in judging how far away motorcycles are or how fast they are traveling. “The law requiring the motorcycle headlight to be on even in daylight has helped some, but motorists should stay alert and con sciously look for these vehicles to help avoid collisions,” Jenkins con cluded. Thomas Jefferson was the first US president to be inaugurated in Washinqioi, D.C
