Letter To The Herald Editor Dear Editor: 1 wish to personally ex press my gratitude to all those who helped to make Chowan’s first May Play Day a success. To all the members and supporters of Chowan Arts Council, a special thank-you because they provided the resources and paid the bills. The Chowan Optimist Club did a tremendous job of keeping scores of children busy and happy. The members of Rocky Hock Community, who made available their facilities and provided a constant supply of food, were greatly appreciated. The success of May Play Day proved several points, one of the most pleasing being the fact that our community is rich in artistic talent and ability. The en tertainers, most of whom were local people who donated their time and talent, gave outstanding performances to ap preciative audiences. The artists and craftsmen brought to the festival items of quality workmanship and artistic.. yvas especially good to have the participation of many who had not previously exhibited their work, and we hope they will continue to exhibit in future shows. Informative and attractive additions in the display area were the Public Interest Exhibits. I would also like to thank all the visiting artists, craftsmen, and performers and I look forward to their joining us in future projects. I have Che sincerest praise and gratitude for the volunteers who served on the planning committees for May Play Day. These people worked countless hours during the past three months and did it willingly and with enthusiasm. Committee chairmen were: Terry Wackelin, Director of the Outdoor Stage and Public Interest Exhibits; Mary Smith, Director of the Indoor Stage; Blanche Woodall, Art Show; Fran Ward, Crafts Show;' Harriet Small, Literary Arts Exhibits; Cyndy Devine, Special Children’s Ac tivities; Lynn. Ober, Maypole Dance; Hazel Bass, Decorations; Gil Burroughs, Design of Festival Area; Steve Evans, Stage Construction ‘ Don Madry and Sammy Byrum, Sound Equipment; Betty Bass, Concessions;, and Jake Boyce, Publicity. Thanks, also, to the many individuals and organizations who loaned or donated items and to the Cpl. Use it on any fabrics except those containing silk or wool. Moisten the stain with straight ammonia and keep it wet'until the stain is gone. Rinse with water. THE CHOWAN HERALD many volunteers who were drafted on-the-spot to help with numerous details. May Play Day was surely a community-wide effort. I think it was such an en joyable day because the right formula went into the making of it; the planning, preparation, and manual labor of hundreds of citizens and God’s blessing of per fect weather and cooperative spirits. And to all the people who came Saturday and enjoyed the offerings of the day: We’re so glad you came, for it would all have gone for nought had you not been there. He gives us freedom of choice, we have the freedom to respond to God or deny Him but with that freedom comes responsibility. If a drunken driver causes an accident which takes the life of another soul, that’s NOT God’s Will but the responsibility of the drunken driver. When our health fails us because we have neglected or abuse our bodies, let it not be said when we die that “it was the will of God”. Think on this. It is a “cop out” when we break all the rules and when the Piper has to be paid, we lay the blame at the feet of God. Thursday, May 6, 1982 We live in the kind of world where there are “thorns in the flesh” all file time and just because we become Christians doesn’t relieve all the evil in the world, so we must pray for things that count. Even when we say “No” to God, God keeps working. Even in the midst of tragedy, something, good always seems to come out. But, we must face die responsibility for our actions and know that “God’s grace is suf ficient”. —o— Special music was provided by Miss Vicky Nelson, accompanied by Mrs. Janie Harrell -a flute solo entitled “Jesus Paid It All”. Vicky really made her flute talk - it was beautiful! “May Play Day” held Saturday at the Rocky Hock Community Center and sponsored by the Chowan Arts Council was a real eye - opener! There was en tertainment for everyone , regardless of age, all day long - and, such variety, from classical to Muegrass! There were many han dicraft exhibits. Food and drinks were plentiful. This community day of activity was impressive. Com munity interest was vivid and I’m sure it broadened the cultural interest of the record crowd in attendance. Many thanks to all the fine folk who had a hand in this well organized event. It should happen more often! —O— Bandon Men’s Fellowship Breakfast will be Saturday at 8 A.M. in Fellowship Hall. All men in the community are invited to attend. Come ContinuGd On Pag* 9-A '
