Thursday, May 20. 1982 Membership Campaign The first spring mem bership campaign for the Chowan Hospital Auxiliary, will be held May 20 and 21, at local grocery stores. Mrs. C.B. Smith, president, stated that the membership drive had been changed to May to take advantage of the more desirable weather than experienced when previous campaigns were conducted in October. Mrs. J.A. Wright, membership chairman, announced . that auxiliary members will be accepting membership dues of $1 from 10 AM. to 6 P.M. on Thursday and Friday at the S & R Super Market and A & P, Winn Dixie and Food Town stores. It is hoped, Mrs. Smith said, that a large number of people will join the auxiliary and become active mem bers. The auxiliary meets three‘times a year on the first Mondays in October, , January and April at 10 A.M. in the Conference ( Hoorn at the hospital. , Proceeds from the j membership campaign and other special projects of the auxiliary are used foh scholarships and for equipment and other needs of the hospital. Mrs. Wright announced that the rural Chowan County membership drive will be headed by Mrs. R.T. Harrell and in Hertford by the Hertford Business and Professional Womens Club. Letter To The Editor Dear Editor: I think your readers should be made aware of a bill that will be considered by the House when the legislature convenes in June. This bill (S.B. 411) was overwhelmingly ap proved by the Senate in the 1981 session. Briefly, S.B. 411 is a more specific definition of chiropractic, to replace the one now on the bodcr, 'Which £ is in the public interest to have an .updated, moder nized definition of any health discipline. Strangely, the state Medical Society is opposed to this bill, and some doctors are writing letters against it. One would think that they, of all people, would want a more specific definition of chiropractic. One point in particular concerns the . public. Chiropractors want to in clude this statement in the law: “The doctor of chiropractic is a primary health provider.” This statement guarantees that North Carolinians will continue to have the freedom to select their health care provider. Medical doctors do not want this statement to be included in the definition. The fact is, the chiropractor is already recognized as a primary health provider by the public, the federal govern ment, federal and state Workers Compensation, Medicare, Medicaid, private and health in surance plans, and the North Carolina State Health Plan. Thousands of North Carolinians prefer treat ment by a doctor of chiropractic when it is appropriate. Licensed chiropractors in this state want to guarantee that they will continue to have the right to select their doctor. Freedom of choice is one of the great advantages of living in America, and I hope that fair-minded citizens wi'l let their State Representative know, either directly or through the merfia, that they want to see Senate Bill 411 passed with the kind of language that will benefit the total health care system.' i Sincerely, B.
