THE CHOWAN HERALD Page 7-B Richard Transfers Vernon L. Richard, employed by Virginia Power & Light Company, has been transferred from Woodbridge, Va., to the Norfolk office. Richard is married to the former Jackie Miller, Route 2, Edenton. The Richard family has purchased a home in Portsmouth, Va. Agricultural News By Murray L. Goodwin Agricultural Extension Agent We have five vegetables tests with cooperating farmers in Chowan County this year. These are as follows: Cantaloupe Variety Test with Jerry Byrum; Watermelon Variety Test with Emmett, Bobby and Hutching Winbome; Sweet Corn Variety Test with Carroll Bass; Watermelon Disease with Buddy and James Jordan; and Sweet Corn Spacing Test with Carroll Bass. The watermelon variety tests has twelve varieties in them. The seed were provided by four companies and the University of Florida. We will discuss the varieties according to the source of seed. From Peto we received Royal Sweet, Baby Fun, and Prince Charles. We think from the information that all three of the Peto varieties have promise in Chowan County. Royal Sweet is oblong variety and similar to Crimson Sweet in marketing. This variety has fusarium wilt resistance and we had it in 1980 in Wayne Bunch test and Pippin test. This was the extremely dry year, but the best we could size it it looks good. We missed getting the seed last year. Baby Fun looks like Crimson Sweet but is a little smaller. It is earlier than Crimson Sweet but has a good flesh color. The in formation we have says it is a “heavy producer.” Prince Charles has shown up very good in our test for past two years. Peto Seed Company was kind enough to give one pound of the seed to Preston Monds, Wilbur Jordan, Buddy Jordan, Carroll Bass, Marvin Evans, Alvin Evans and Chuck Sopher. These men will compare Prince Charles with another Gray variety. From the University of Florida we received Charles Gray No. 5, Oasis, and Dixie Lee. Charleston Gray No, 5 is an improved Charleston Gray. Oasis is a new one developed by Niagara Seed Company. Niagara was out of the seed when I contacted them. Dr. Elmstrom of Florida Research Center and Leesburg thinks this variety is a good one. Asgrow provides us with Mirage, Madera, and Sun Shade. These are good looking melon and eat good. We know that Sun Shade is susceptible to fusarium wilt. For Madera and Mirage we are not sure. From Harris Seed Company we got the seed for Isopride. This new variety was developed by the University of lowa ac cording to the seed catalog. However, we suspect it comes from lowa State University. Dr. Charles Hall is the head of the Hor ticultural Department there. Crimson Sweet came as a result of his research. Isopride - This variety is a little late. It is an open pollinated variety. It has attractive dark green skin with darker green stripe. It is a good eating melon. Twilly sent us Charleston Gray 133 and three can taloupe varieties. We will discuss our cantaloupe test later. loo'll I ggS I r fCortaid~lc J
