vTSItOkINSPIRESHOLMESARTsTUDENTS Duane Hylton, center, a senior from Patrick County High School, Stuart, Virginia, recently inspired Holmes’ art students with his artistic ability. A guest of Mrs. Susan Birckhead, center, instructor, Duane spent the entire day at Holmes talking with students about various forms and techniques which he prefers as an artist and showing some of his own works. Young Hylton, who has been painting since he was three, designed his school’s Year Book cover. He plans to major in art and commercial advertising at the Commonwealth of Virginia next year. Painting to preserve away of life, Hylton draws mostly from his imagination, personal experience and contacts with people. Each of his paintings has a story, which are generally just as fascinating to hear as his paintings are to see. The major topic of business dealt with a crosstitch quilt the Woman’s Club is making which will be raffled in the fall. The theme of the quilt is Historic Edenton and North Carolina in general. Along with the quilt raffle the club will be having a tasting luncheon to coincide with the new edition of our cookbook. It was decided that the Woman’s Club will institute a School and Community Service Award to an out standing Holmes High School senior. The student will be chosen for his or ha scholastic achievements, extra curricular par ticipation and community involvement. Annette Wood was our guest speaker for the May meeting. She gave a most informative talk on her recent trip to South Africa. The culture, geography and people made South Africa a truly wonderful area to visit she concluded. Fifty certificates were ministration at ECU, brought together out standing typing students and their teachers from central and eastern North Carolina. Over 260 students competed by demonstrating their skills in timed writing, production work, and typing theory. Grace Byrum, business education teacher at John A. Holmes High School, is the students’ instructor. presented by Betz Ricks of Edenton and Judy Nooney of the Regional Office in Greenville. Miss Ricks, who is Social Worker for the Blind in the three counties, gave the welcome and presided at the banquet. Jennings cited the im portant role that volunteers serve in assisting in the school visual screening programs, providing 1 transportation for clients, and assisting in rehabilitation of persons in adjusting to the loss of vision. He stated that the goal of the state agency are to prevent blindness and restore sight, helping the visually impaired live in dependently and rehabilitation to provide counseling and training for employment. Jennings, who is visually impaired, was at one time a client of the agency he now heads.
