Parker Chesson, Jr., College of The Albemarle president, during graduation exercises at the college last Friday evening. Ms. Crump, COA director of resource development, became the victim of a fatal bicycle accident on May 3 when she was struck head - on by an automobile traveling south in a northbound lane on four - lane U.S. Highway 17 near the college. The driver was charged with driving under the influence and manslaughter. (COA Photo) Leon D. Hayes Promoted To Wood Products Manager PLYMOUTH - Leon D. Hayes has been promoted to wood products manager for Weyerhaeuser Co.’s N.C. Leon D. Hayes Region, it has been an nounced by Region Vice President Norman E. Johnson. Hayes has been acting region wood products manager for the past three months, following the unexpected death of D. N. McClary, former region wood products manager. Hayes progressed through a number of wood products production supervisory positions there until trans ferring to a production position at the company’s Springfield, OR pulp mill in 1973. In 1974, he became superintendent of a plywood plant at Springfield and held that position for three years until becoming plywood plant superintendent at the Cottage Grove facility. Hayes was promoted to wood products manager - South for the North Carolina Region in 1980, where he was responsible for the operation of a sawmill at New Bern, a fiberboard plant at Moncure and the Jacksonville plywood plant. Wright, district network switching manager, Carolina Telephone, an nounced that the final testing of equipment in the new digital office at Hert ford, is being completed. “This involves a verification of each telephone number in the Hertford Exchange. You will be called and asked to return a call to the com pany,” stated Wright. “We apologize for any in convenience.” There will be no telephone number changes as a result of the new office. The new office will offer customer calling features for those who want it. “One of these features is ‘call forwarding’ and this is especially useful for people away from their telephone and can be reached at another telephone number within the same exchange,” said T. F. Daniels, District Commercial and Marketing Manager. “There will be a nominal monthly charge for this feature or other special features a subscriber may choose,” he stated. "Mothers Against Drunk Drivers” Raleigh - The Governor’ll Highway Safety Program, . uggch is campaigning to reduce the number of . drinking drivers in North Carolina, will assist groups to form MADD chapters in thei state. MADD stands for “Mothers Against Drunk Drivers," a national movement that was started in California. GHSP director Col. Edwin Guy said that the North Carolina effort will be coordinated by Floyd (Sam) Bass, who is the coordinator of several safety programs Edenton - Chowan Lunch Menus The Edenton - Chowan Schools have released their lunch menus for June 7 -11. Monday - orange juice, little smokies, buttered grits and milk. Pizza, tossed salad, potato rounds, ket chup, frosted cake squares and milk. Tuesday- fruit or fruit juice, honey bun and milk. Hamburger w-bun, ketchup mustard, baked beans, fruit cup and milk. Wednesday - orange juice, doughnuts and milk. Fried Chicken, potato salad, green beans, cookies, rolls and milk. Friday - School’s Choice. 95 C.O.A Students Receive Degrees Degrees and diplomas . were conferred upon 95 graduates by Dr. J. Parker Chesson, Jr., College of The Albemarle president, last Friday evening at the 20th Spring Commencement Exercises. The outdoor ceremony took place on the lawn at the community college’s Elizabeth City campus. Four Chowan County residents received degrees. Three earned honors. They were: Donna Johnson Downing; summa cum laude,TTA.Sr genWaFbffKe' technology; Kim Murph Fleetwood, summa cum laude, A.A.S. nursing; Pauline Renee,, Granby, ' A.A.S. general office technology; and Iris Doreen Meekins, nragna cum laude, A.A. pre-elementary education. Ms. Fleetwood also was one of two graduates who completed her course of study with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. State Rep. Charles Evans, commencement speaker, praised the institution for being a part of one of the best community educational systems in the country. “Our state’s community college system is the third largest in the nation and, in my opinion and that of many of the experts in the field, it offers one of our country’s finest programs of vocational and technical education,” Evans declared. He said the state now has 58 institutions which have more than a half million students enrolled. He also noted that the community college system works closely with industries throughout the state to assist in the training of employees and as a source of employment for many of its graduates. Evans listed five basic principles of life which will better assure the graduates’ forward progress toward, their goals and ultimate' success. “The first principle of good living which will tend to lead to success and personal happiness in in dustriousness,” he said. “Tliose who are industrious are usually lucky, and luck is what happens when preparation meets op portunity. Evans’ second principle for success was courtesy. Following this, be listed honesty, perserverance and good habits, and character.
