W —..- ' - - ■ • - ' ■■ ./• ■ . ; , - *f' • ■ . \ Oiowan Jr. High School Awards Day Programs j In welcoming parents and | friends last Friday to | Chowan Junior High j School’s second annual awards day program, i Principal John Guard ex ! pressed part of his educational philosophy. “We’re here”, Guard said, “to honor students for their hard work in the classroom, on an academic and citizenship basis, because that is what school is all about.” During the ceremonies, top students at each grade level were recognized in each major academic area with medals and cer tificates. Two awards were also presented from the community. The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) presented their annual 7th and Bth grade citizenship award to Jackie Boyce and Brian Bunch, respectively. Mrs. William Nixon, Regent, made this presentation. A new trophy, The Alice H. Belch North Carolina History award was initiated in honor of Mrs. Belch, who taught at Chowan and whose specialty was North Carolina History. This trophy will be placed in the school’s trophy case and the winning student’s name added each year. The Chowan High School Citizenship awards were presented to Sharon Harrell and Gwen Felton, 7th and Bth graders, respectively. Emerging as an out standing student at Chowan Junior High, Robin Bass, 7th grader, received recognition in seven dif ferent areas. In addition to being on the A—B Honor Roll for the year and vice - president of the Student Senate, Robin received the top math, science, social studies cultural journalism, art, and advanced language arts medals. ++* »' '.ffll UJFrbrtr an’enrollment of 410, twenty - five students* were recognized for having been on either the A or A—B Honor Rolls for the year as follows: Julie Baker 6th-A; and Donna Pippins - Bth grade-A, A—B honors went to: Andy Bunch and Michele Parrish-6th; Robin Bass, Tammy Copeland, Alisha Granby, Sharon Miller, Chris Rountree, Melissa Shaw, Robin Tynch, Liza Vaughan, Teresa Drew and DeAnne Morris - 7th grade; Gina Bass, Brian Bunch, Angela Davenport, Sherry Evans, Jacqueline Harris, Teresa Twine, Terry Watson, Tanja White, Trina Johnson, Mark Hollowell and Jennifer Lane - Bth grade. Each participant was certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support. The eight - hour course covered one and two rescuer CPR, management of the ob structed airway on the conscious and the un conscious victim, and infant CPR. Certification included passing cognitive and performance examinations related to the material presented, in accordance with the established criteria of the American Heart Association.
