The Reverends W.Da Keyes and D.W. Lamb ofß ficiated the double - ring ceremony. Parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Stokes of Roper. Parents of the bridegroom are Mr. William Backus of Eden ton and Mrs. Hazel Backus of Washington, D.C. Prenuptial music was presented by Mrs. Thomasanne Murphy. Mr. Jimmy Sutton sang “You and I” and Mrs. Deborah Madrey sang “Lean on Me.” After the lighting of the candles, Mrs. Judith Gaskins and Mr. Armstead Gilliam sang “Endless Love.” Mrs. Murphy con tinued to [day Endless Love while the wedding party entered. The bride entered the sanctuary, escorted by her father, on Nadia’s theme and was given away by her parents. The bride wore a gown of nylon chiffon with a Queen Anne neckline, with a fitted bodice of French lace adorned with seeded pearls. The accordian pleated skirt extended into a chapel length train edged in lace. She wore a matching “Lady Diana” hat with seeded pearl lace. 1 The bride carried a bouquet of stephanotis and white daisies. The mother of the bride , wore a pink formal dress with an overlay of chiffon. She wore an orchid corsage. The mother of the groom wore a peach dress and wore an orchid corsage. Flowers were given to Mrs. Edna Wilkins Baker and Mrs. Martha Stokes Cleveland in memory of Regina’s maternal and paternal grandmothers and were presented to Mrs. Geneva Austin, the groom’s grandmother. These presentations were made by Mrs. Paula Backus Williams, sister of the groom. The bride presented her mother and the groom’s mother with a single long , stem rose before leaving the altar. ; t: t After the exchange ot Bthe groom honored the with a special musical lon “You”. The Lord’s Prayer was sung by Mrs. Madrey. C. Menina Stokes of Williamston served as her sister’s maid of honor and Mrs. Thomasanne Wilkins Murphy, cousin of the bride from Bloomsfield, Con necticut, served as an honorary matron of honor. The maid of honor carried a nosegay of daisies with baby’s breathe. Attendants were Ms. Gwendolyn Backus of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Scottye L. Brown of Durham, N.C.; Ms. Patricia L. Glaze of Salisbury, Maryland; Mrs. Ora L. Jones of Plymouth, N.C.; Mrs. Marsha M. Owens of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Ms. Allyson Stokes of Jessup, Maryland. Ari Wilkins, cousin of the bride, was flower girl. She carried a white basket of blue and white petals. Jerrard Gaskins, cousin of the groom, served as ring bearer. Kareem and Sekou Murphy pulled the aisle carpet just before the bride entered the church. Adrian Backus of Waltham, Massachusetts was his brother’s best man. Ushers were Joseph Austin of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; William Backus, Jr. of Southfield, Michigan; Marshall Jordan of Eden ton, N.C.; Wesley Stokes of Roper, N.C.; David Twine of Roanoke Rapids; Edward Williams of Washington, DC. Mrs. Gloria Davenport Hedgepeth of Columbia, Maryland was director, assisted by Mrs. Joan Parker of Plymouth, NX!. The bride is a graduate of Hampton Institute and is presently employed by Food Town Stores. The groom is a graduate of Elizabeth City State University and is a trooper with the N.C. State Highway Patrol. A reception followed the wedding at the Masonic Lodge Hall.' The reception was given by aunts of the jprjdp - Mrs. Willie .W|nfield and Mrs. Tyress Keyes. Mrs. Nellie Griffin of Plymouth catered the reception. Mrs. Snelby Smith decorated the Masonic Hall. Mrs. Jsrolyn D. Fitchett of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. was at the gift table. Cake cutters were Mrs. Charlene Freeman and Mrs. Corrine Price, cousins of the bride. Mrs. Carolyn Wilkins was at the punch bowl. Hostesses were: Mrs. Paula Williams, Ms. Yvonne Mitchell, Ms. Vanessa Davis and Mrs. Darnell White. Following the reception, the parents of the bride entertained the families fend out -of - town guests with a catered dinner on the lawn at the Wilkins Family Home. The dinner was catered by Mrs. Flora Banks of Edenton. James Elliott, a photographer from Durham, N.C.; was in charge of pictures. After the dinner, the couple left on a wedding trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. They have made their home in Elizabeth City. I am against any one person controlling three votes or dominating the Chowan County Board of Commissioners, and propose that no commissioner serve more than two years as Chairman. I further propose that the Com missioners follow the law and have no one serve more than two terms on boards and committees. I support night meetings so that all can attend if they Wish. I cannot support the statement that "we tried night meetings and no more people attended than during the day meetings". I support the "conflict of interest" lew. I will not appoint any family mem bers on county committees or boards.
