President Reagan, his press secretary, James Brady, and several others were seriously injured in this assassination attempt. Because the event was captured on video tape by news cameras, the whole country was able to see this tragic event replayed many times. One distressing aspect of the verdict returned in the Hinckley case is that Hinck ley has been labeled “not guilty” even though he was clearly the man who shot and wounded President Reagan and others in the Presidential party. Hinck ley will be committed to a mental institution for a period of time in order to determine whether he constitutes a danger to himself or oth2rs. It is conceivable that he might be released after a relative short period of confinement and this would certainly appear to be an injustice. Many Members of Congress have expressed an intent to support legislation that will alter the laws governing the insanity defense in cases such as Hinckley’s. I cer tainly share the concern of these Members and will be looking closely at the various proposals that are II J T fCortiycl JSfef I £*} r rr J u r I Leary Bros. When finally passed by both Houses, however, the President vetoed the Ap propriations Bill because it contained a program to provide emergency relief to the very depressed housing industry. The House then passed two alternative funding bills that did not include the housing program. The Senate, in turn, passed one of these bills. As of this time, the President has not indicated whether he will sign or veto this latest emergency ap propriation bill. Another item of interest occurring this week was the passage by the House of new tobacco legislation which I Clothing Closet Located Over Pate’s Florist Open Mon. And Thurs. (1-4) pm All Items < 50 each The Service Is Sponsored By The Local Churches have described previously in the Washington Report. .What was remarkable about (this was that the tobacco bill ’passed the House unanimously on a voice vote. Unfortunately, hopes for a similar quick passage in the Senate were dashed when certain problems developed in obtaining a time agreement to limit debate on the bill and thus prevent a possible filibuster. It is expected that the tobacco bill will be con sidered in the Senate on July 14 after Congress has returned from its Fourth of July recess. As mentioned above, Congress will be in recess for about two weeks. The Washington Report will accordingly be suspended during this time. I want to take this op portunity to wish you all a happy and safe Fourth of July holiday. 'Truth is rarely pure and never simple." Oscar Wilde | Open House | An ‘Open House’ will be held at the Museum of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City on July 3 from 11 A.M. - S P.M. There will be free hot dogs and cokes furnished by the R.C. Museum of History Associates, and free balloons will be given out to the children. The Albemarle Concert Band, conducted by Charles Penrose, will perform on the museum lawn at 2 P.M. Perquimans Horse Show The Perquimans County Horse and Pony Club will Horse Show Sunday, starting at 1 o’clock. The show ring is located four miles west of Hertford on Joe Perry Farm. At intermission Gene Baker will entertain us with a clogging performance. The Concession Stand will have charcoal grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, homemade ice cream, jacks, cakes and pies.
