Hunt praised Dr. Whitaker for his dedication to improving the mental health, education and spiritual growth of North Carolina young people. Gov. Hunt noted, “The Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker School will be a living example of government responding to the needs of its people and a living testimony to a man who has devoted his life to making sure that the lives of others are as rich, reward ding and meaningful as they can be.” He told the young people, “The reason we are naming your school after Dr. Whitaker is that he has always shown a special interest in young people. His name represents the kind of caring that we want you to know you have.” Hunt presented Whitaker with a commemorative plaque as the crowd gave Chowan’s president a standing ovation. Hie two men were presented Whitaker School t - shirts by two of the school’s students. (on U/ant To "Print... N C. 221 -845 7 Smell* Crossroads George Drawdy, Owner Phone 4 82-4770 THE CHOWAN HERALD During his response, Whitaker said he was both “embarrassed and pleased.” He said the decision to name the school for him came as a complete surprise and that, in his mind, “there were a number of people who deserved it more than I.” He also said he was pleased that his name “will be associated with an effort to meet human need in North Carolina, an ap proach and effort which we have been working toward for a number of years. I am pleased that my name will be associated with this ef fort to meet the needs of a particular segment of our people in North Carolina. I am happy with the way it is developing and operating to date.” Whitaker said he was no stranger to the building that houses the Whitaker School. “In the early 1940’s when I was a student at Wake Forest College, I was in volved in the construction of these buildings which are now used in this complex. The buildings were con structed for use during the Second World War. I spent a summer working with steam fitters, primarily in the attics -a hot summer! It is a source of satisfaction to me that these buildings are now used as instruments of peace and good will, meeting human needs.” Whitaker expressed his gratitude “to my fellow North Carolinians who have made this school - center possible. I accept this honor with appreciation and sincere gratitude.” The long - term residential treatment program includes training in educational, vocational, recreational, and social living skills. The staff works closely with families and communities to help the children develop to their fullest potential so they can become contributing members of society. The majority of the students at the Whitaker School are among the “Willie M” class' of children. These children have serious emotional or mental handi caps and display aggressive behavior. The name “Willie M” grew out of a 1979 class action legal suit on behalf of four North Carolina children. As a result, the state has agreed to identify and provide evaluation and treatment MUFFLER Installed $9095 most American cards & trucks Albemarle Tire & 4ito Parts N. Broad St 482-4454 Edenton, NC 482-3384 for this special class of children. Dr. Whitaker is a current member and former chairman of both the North Carolina - Commission for Mental Health, Mental Retardation Services, and Substance Abuse Services; and the North Carolina State Board of Mental Health. Students from the Whitaker School also played a leading role during the day. Waring bright red t - shirts emblazoned with “Whitaker School” in white on the front, they conducted tours of the facility and explained the programs to visitors. One male guide explained that students are rewarded for good behavior and classroom progress, and that he had received sev eral privileges and rewards. Cadet, the term used to describe students in the U.S. military acad emies, is a French word meaning younger son. ■■ II i ■ i ■ i ■' Assumes New Post 5 Rebecca G.
