Thursday, July a, 1982 The Bandon Notebook: Taking Pride In The American Way Os Life Hi, Neighbors! “Happy are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make them come true.” These words are printed across the en trance to a school playground. Children of this school wanted and needed a playground - but - govern ment funds they had ex pected for this purpose failed to materialize. This didn’t stop the children! They went out, told their story to big business men, little business men and to anyone who would listen. They worked hard and raised all the necessary funds to complete their dream! This is a good example of how the “American” way should be. They worked hard, used ingenuity, their God given talents and even gave their lives to make it become a reality. “Hand outs” were never expected nor received - hard work, long hours and plenty of prayer were the “order of the day”. Now is the time “Life is a struggle for peace, a longing for rest, A hope for the battles to cease, a dream for the best; And he is not living who stays contented with things, Unconcerned with the work of the days and all that it brings. Life isn’t rest-it is toil; it is building a dream; It is tilling a pared of soil or bridging a stream; It’s pursuing the light of a star that but dimly we see, And in wresting from things as they are the joy that should be.” On this Lord’s Dav and the for the American people to again become self-reliant and realize that today is only the first step to something better; that with God, nothing is impossible. At the beginning of World War II Edgar A. Guest published “Poems of Patriotism”. This is one of the poems, just as ap plicable today as it was then: day we celebrated our Nation’s Independence, it was great just to be alive to enjoy all the wonders of God’s creation and to exercise one of the freedoms our forefathers fought for - privilege of entering the church of OUR choice to worship God and recharge our spiritual batteries. The fine folk gathered at Bandon Chapel for Sunday School were enthusiastically welcomed by Supt. Meta Mason, especially our many guests. They were treated to a delightful lesson entitled “Onesimus: A Slave Who- Became a Brother”, Philem. 8-18, which clearly indicated the love of Christ breaks down all social and racial barriers. It was skillfully taught by Deacon Wm. F. Smith. Prayer List; I sincerely believe that prayer is the most powerful force in this world today. Please add our. friends to your prayer list. Mrs. Ruby Taylor, sister of Bob Mason, is confined to Leigh Memorial Hospital, Norfolk, Va.; Michael Thocker, Rt. 1, Smithfield, Va., Olga Taylor’s cousin, is now on the kidney machine and urgently needs your prayers; Elton Boswell was released from Norfolk General Saturday. Pray that God will place His Healing hands upon him; little Erin Holt, 11 mos. old, granddaughter of Gil and Bobby Jean Holt, has been released from the hospital following a bout with pneumonia but still needs prayer; our beloved “Janie” Harrell is recouperating at home following recent surgery. Pray for her speedy recovery; remember Ella Powell, sister of Garris Perry and little Brad Gosser; pray for our Nation, its people and that God will guide the decisions made by its leaders; remember our missionnaries and our Pastor, Rev. Robert S. Harrell and his family. Men’s Fellowship Break fast will be at 8 A.M. Saturday in Fellowship Hall. Come on out for some “good eating” and fellowship. Bandon’B Board of Deacons will meet on Saturday at 9:30 A.M. in Fellowship Hall. Rebecca Circle - WOC will meet at the home of Rose Smith on Sunday (11th) at 3 P.M. Harrell, joyfully welcomed the near capacity crowd of members and visitors, especially first timers Mr. & Mrs. Gary Sampsen of Lumberton, N.C. and Mr. Bob Worrell of Sacramento, Calif. Pastor Bob’s powerful message, based on Mark 12:13-17, brought out that the freedom we have today was bought with a heavy price - and - with that freedom comes respon sibility. Since July 4th was Independence Day and a time to think about our' beginnings as a Nation, he enumerated the bedrock principles on which this country was founded: \. A deep and abiding belief in the involvment of God in the events of people. God ac tually involves Himself in the affairs of men and of nations; 2. The dignity of man.
