Page 8-B Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, We are writing because we think the citizens of Chowan County should be aware of our situation as it truly is. Our home burned Jan. 30,1978, we lost everything. Chowpn County was very supportive to us. We will never forget the kindness and help that was shown to us in our hour of need. We’re asking for your support again in a very different situation. We have four children ages 12, 14, 15 and 18. My husband has been disabled since June 14, 1968, so when we had the fire I didn’t believe people were really aware of how hard it really hit us, because my husband draws Social Security Disability, weare on a limited income in the first place. We didn’t have enough in surance on our home to have a good coverage. So what we were actually faced with was that we had to start all over again with four school children on a limited income.Knowingthiswetried to be very careful in what to do, because all we had left was the property in Arrowhead Beach. So we took 15 months in which to decide what to do and how we could handle it. We had to move (after the fire) to the project at Davis place in town. My children did not even have the priviledge of playing out doors. It is mostly the low est class of people that live there. My children were subjected to seeing and hearing things that in other words we would not have had happen to them if we had a choice. They hear such vile language, see rapes, excessive drinking, wife and child abuse, (beatings) and knifings. When they wanted to play we carried them to Arrowhead Beach at our lot to play. For example, the first time my 8 year old walked outside he was hit with a brick in the back of his head and busted his head badly. Our children were never around anything like this before and it affects them deeply. Our problem is after long consideration we had Jim Walters build a home on our property May, 1979. They put this house up in three (tays. So we would be able to handle the payment, we had them build the house, not finish the inside and they did the plumbing and wiring. They did not build the house as it should have been. We complained from the very JOHN DOWD & ASSOCIATES, INC. We made payments and still complained, no results. After checking around we found Chowan County does not have a building inspector. My husband and I bought materials, electric heaters to install, which we did. My husband and boys worked all summer in 1979 so we could move back in time for them to go back to White Oak and Chowan School. This is all our children wanted, to move back where they were. Under the circumstances you can see why we moved in before we completed the utility and bedrooms. But from the very beginning we had more problems than what we thought. The kitchen sink dropped down and bowed, the outside utility wall was coming apart, the roof was falling in one end, the door was never even fastened to the house, we could not even shut or lock our front door, we had to prop a chair against it. The front door steps were pulling away from the house, the piers underneath the house were shattering and falling down, even our front living room and front bedroom windows were falling out, the plumbing and wiring was incorrect. Because of the wiring our electric stove didn’t cook properly, our refrigerator would defrost every few days, if we had a fan on, on low it would hardly turn, if it was on high, it was running the speed it should have been on low. They did not build the house where we staked it off and built (the front part on a wide slab of cement, which was part of the old foundation of the old house which burned. We had Ralph Parrish, building inspector for the town of Edenton, to go out there twice. He said he would have condemned it, but it was out of his jurisdiction, so he couldn’t, but he offered to go to court with us if we sued. We have and it is still tied up, but the problem is after taking advice from our ittorney, who after getting a juction, told us everything was frozen and we would not have to make any more payments. Months later, they forclosed the mortage in Mecklenburg County, Charlotte, N.C. (one of their home offices). This is where they want the case tried. We wouldn’t have a chance. This house is in such bad shape, we could not even get any insurance on it. Do you have any idea what it feels • like knowing you don’t have any kind of insurance on anything, after having been through the experience of losing everything in a fire? They are now trying to auction off our home and property for sale at the courthouse door This has happened once' on July 21, 1982 and now we have been notified of having another public auction on Sept. 3, 1982. We are appealing to you as the public to help us bring this case (transfer) to Chowan County and your /" 11 ■ ■ 1— * I IAIiMIM I Delicious Print Blanket I I AQUARIUM Coble values up to $10.99 I I VIH7 ,0 Ice Cream I Several I I I I 1 I Solid Blanket RINSO HAIR SPRAY TRANSMISSION WD-40 I FLUID limit 1 50% Polyester 50% Acrvlic ® I ’ Heavy duty laundry detergent.
