Page 8-A To The Editor: Ransom Denied Coaching Post Dear Editor: I had hoped to stay out of this as much as possible but since this entire situation is newsworthy enough to achieve front page coverage I suppose it is worth my time to clarify several points that were stated in the article. First, I did not accept my position at Holmes High School “because I needed a job”. I have not made that statement and anyone who claims to have gotten that impression is simply grabbing at straws. Further I should probably state that my major in college was Physical Education. I have coached before (softball) but I have not coached tennis. The tennis team last year was undefeated in conference play. We may have another undeafeated season but that is not necessarily im provement. If you look at the won - lost column and the team loses just one match - then that is “going down hill”. I resent the inference that my in volvement with the team automatically makes it a poorer team. What is most irritating about this matter is the way it has been presented by the media of our county. Most newspapers that I read make an effort to present both sides, and give the reader credit for being intelligent enough to draw his own conclusions and form his own opinion. If a person is interviewed who makes what may be one - sided statements or ac cusations, they are professional enough to check out the other side. If Terri Ranson said Nan Copeland “accepted it because she needed the job”, then the reporter and - or editor should have asked Nan Copeland if that were true; before printing the statement. Again in the last paragraph of the article one can see the same type of insult to the readers’ mentality. Rather than let the reader formulate his own reaction to Dr. Hom thal’s words, we are told that he is downplaying the aU M spring |m, summer merchandise f 150% fc Off The Betty Shoppe downtown edenton j CLASS RING SPECIAL! If I were involved with the media, at the top of my priorities list would be to strive to be completely objective on news and to save subjectivity for the editorials where it should be. I wonder how I would feel if I were a student hoping to be on the tennis team. Perhaps I would wonder if all those involved really have my and the teams best interest at heart. Perhaps I would wonder - why? As coach to the tennis team I can only say what I have already said - you have my 100 per cent. I need and the school needs your 100 per cent. The team was the best last year* and can be again this year - each in dividuals play has room for improvement and higher achievement on the court. Go for it! I could say more on the subject but considering past observation on such matters I feel that it would be to my benefit and the teams best interest to let those parties, actually involved, settle this. In reality how can we make valid statements if we don’t know the whole story - and there are only three people that do know the whole story. I am not one of them. Nan Copeland Day Care Continued From Page 3-A James B. Hunt, Jr., feel that day care is one of the top priorities of this ad ministration. “Day care services are an economic necessity for many families with small children,” Dr. Morrow said. “It often is necessary for both parents to work in order to make ends meet, especially in North Carolina, which has more working mothers than any state in the nation.” North Carolina was the first state to provide state day care funding for eligible low-income families. State and federal funding is allocated to all 100 counties on the basis of population. I Donald Wagner Holy Land Tour Set For November A November tour to the land of Jesus and the Jews is being organized by Donald Wagner, pastor of the Rocky Hock Baptist Church. The tour begins in Cairo, Egypt, near the land of Goshen, where the Jews lived for about 400 years. After a side excursion to the Valley of the Kings and King Tut’s Tomb, the tour will follow some of the Hebrew wanderings in the Sinai Peninsula to Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments, and then .travel overland to Bethlehem, the place of Jesus’ birth, and Jerusalem, where so many of His ac tivities were performed. There will be many places of interest, such as: the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus walked on the water; Mount Hermon, the origin of the Jordan River; the Dead Sea; Nazareth, Jesus’ home town; Masada, where the Jews held out against the Romans after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.; and a sightseeing excursion to Amsterdam, Holland. This will be our third year, and we want to continue this successful and well-received award.” He continued, “the term ‘farmer’ has in the past been a term attributed to males. "Hatteras Light” Continued From Page 3-A much additional spending which help create jobs for North Carolina’s people.” The tallest lighthouse in the nation, the Cape Hat teras structure was erected more than one hundred years ago in an area nearly one-half mile from the sea. Erosion and storm damage have claimed most of that area, and the lighthouse currently stands less than 250 feet from the ocean. The fund-raising plan to rescue the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was announced last year by U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms and Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr., co-chairmen of the campaign. The money will be used for im provements to prevent further erosion that threatens the structure’s stability.
