Rains Beneficial To Crofcis by Mike WiUiams Frequent rains and warm temperatures during July were beneficial to the development of most crop 6 in the State according to the North Carolina Crop and Livestock Reporting Ser vice. Today’s forecast, based on crop conditions around August 1, indicated more corn, soybeans and sweet potatoes but less tobacco, peanuts, cotton and apples than a year earlier. Flue-cured tobacco production is forecast at 644 million pounds, 15 per cent less than last year’s crop of 756 million pounds. The lower production resulted from a reduction in acreage for harvest and lower yields per acre. Acreage for harvest is estimated at 312,000 acres, 12 per cent below the 1981 crop of 353,000 acres. The average yield per acre is forecast at 2,065 pounds, 80 pounds less than the 1981 average yield. Burley tobacco is forecast at 27.5 million pounds, 1 per cent less than last year’s production. Maryland type tobacco in North Carolina is forecast at 165 thousand pounds, only one per cent of last year’s production. Trade Negotiations WASHINGTON, D.C.- Sen. John East, (R-N.C.), has urged President Reagan to be “hard-nosed” in up coming textile trade negotiations with Com munist China. “These negotiations are of vital importance to the people of my state. As you know, Communist China was not a signatory of the Multifiber Arrangement that was concluded last year in Geneva, and has evidenced every intention of increasing its textile and apparel exports to the U.S. Such a development would jeopardize the livelihoods of the hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians employed by the textile-fiber-apparel complex,” said East in a letter to the White House. "Global Shield ’B2” Tech. Sgt. Willie J. Leary, Jr., son of Willie J. Leary, Sr., Route 1, Edenton, has participated in an Air Force Strategic Air Command (SAC) exercise called Global Shield 82. Leary, a security supervisor with the 92nd Missile Security Squadron, Minot Air Force Base, N.D., joined others from all SAC units in the United States and selected Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard units to take part in "After-School” Swimming Classes Two “after - school” swimming classes are being offered by the Chowan County Chapter of the American Red Cross for those who hold beginners or advanced beginners swimming cards. Nevertheless, I felt it im portant to urge you not to allow the bureaucrats hjt the Department of to dictate a trade policy toward Communist China which denies the economic well-being of our own citizens,” he said. It was designed to enhance readiness and the ability of the command to cfirry out orders which support U.S. national policy, should deterrence fail. Components of the 1 U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, as well as elements of the Canadian forces, also participated in the exercise. struction will be held at the Coach House Motel pool from 5 to 5:45 and 6 to 6:45 beginning Monday, August 23.
