Here, the group observed some of the newer water management techniques such as drainage systems that also serve for irrigation. Water control measures are used to hold back water in the drainage canals for irrigation. Hie water can be released when drainage is needed. Un derground drain tile is also used in the fields for both drainage and irrigation. Bunch says, “Dr. Wayne i Skaggs of N.C. State i University is researching these techniques. He has also found that retaining water in the ditches helps reduce nitrogen content in the water. This will improve the quality of released water.” The tour also stopped at Roper School where the group saw a drainage measure developed through the Resource Conservation and Develpment (RC&D) program. This drainage around the school site was funded about 85 per cent federally and 15 per cent locally. A similar proposal is being planned for Union School in Wins all. “This annual tour is designed to show local of ficials and the general public some of the work available through the Conservation District and the RC&D Development Committee,” Bunch con cluded.
