Tom Mann Someone asked me the quickest way to learn how to fish an unfamiliar lake, when you lack the expertise of the pros who fish for a living. Well, the very best way 1 know is to hire a guide who, every day he can, fishes the lake you plan to fish. Most guides are dedicated to giving you a full day’s fishing for your money, and most of them earn every c»rWey charge. Being a specialist, the guide knows not only where the fish hang out but also he keeps up with their seasonal movements. But, as in any profession, there are topflight guides and there are so-so guides, many times just a matter of personality traits. So it pays to inquire around to be certain you’re engaging a guide who’s earned his stature. Watch where he goes, how he fishes, ask a thousand questions and remember his answers. In one day you can learn more from a good guide than you can in years on your own. I believe you’ll say you never made a better investment! Brer Tom’s closing tip: When you’re in the learning stage of fishing, it’s wise to keep handy a small notebook for jotting down things you don’t want to forget. Because if you don’t jot it’s soon forgot. Come give it a try on Monday and Wednesday Check Your Social Security Record Lee E. WalUo Field Representive People who work in employment covered by Social Security should check their Social Security record every 3 years or so. Checking the record is especially important if the person changes jobs often or has more than one job. A post-card form is available at any Social Security office for a person to request a statement of the earnings reported to his record. A person’s earnings record is very important. Eligibility for benefits and the amount of any benefits due will be based on the information contained in that record. SECTION B nights from 6:00-7:00 or drop in on the Saturday morning class at 10:00. A small registration fee is charged. Call the Recreation Dept, at 482-8595 or Julie Spivey at 482-8055. Return Those Uniforms If you still have a baseball uniform from this past season then you need to turn it in before you are eligible to participate in any other program. Don’t be left out, turn your uniform in today. Thank you. Once a person receives a statement of earnings, he should examine it carefully to make sure that the proper amount of earnings has been reported to Social Security. If the person’s own records do not agree with the amounts shown on the statement, he should con tact a Social Security office right away. The person should bring his own records of the earnings that are available, such as W-2 forms or self employment tax returns. More information about Social Security earnings can be obtained by calling the Elizabeth City Social Security office at 338-2161. We*t W. By rum Agency, Inc. The Independent Agency That Cares. N.C. 482 4428 School Television Programs Television viewers in Chowan County will have a chance to preview school television programs Sep tember 6, from 9 A.M. until 3 P.M. on the University of North Carolina Center for Public Television. It’s an opportunity to learn how teachers and students use television in the classroom. The programs are interesting, en tertaining, as well as in formative. The program might be a lesson in economics or one in science or one in reading; you might take a lesson in French conversation or in English composition, and you might enjoy a short story classic. Instrustional television programs, selected by educators in the N.C. Department of Public In struction and in the schools across the state, help teachers teach and students learn. They are termed instructional television programs, distingushed from the educational television programs airing on Center after 3 P.M. and on weekends. Instructional television series are designed with the school curriculum in mind, selected to supplement courses of study in North Carolina schools, kin dergarten through twelfth grade. Teachers’s guides accompany instructional series so teachers can plan the lesson prior to broad cast. The guide provides activities for each lesson to help students learn the skills and concepts emphasized in the program. “School television was used by over a million children during the last school year,” State Superintendent Craig Phillips remarked. “It’s a wonderful way to sup plement textbook learning.” The N.C. Department of Public Instruction is responsible for the selec tion, acquisition, funding, and scheduling of the in structional television programs airing on Center during the school day.
