Page 4-B People are beginning to get excited about striped bass aquaculture. More research is being done and more articles are appearing in aquaculture magazines and journals. One reason is that this research has developed a faster growing hybrid, which is easier to keep alive. The hybrid is a cross between the female striper and the male white bass. These hybrids have been raised at our Aquaculture Demonstration Project for two years now. As many people know, the hybrid and the striper (or rockfish) thrive in fresh, brackish or salt water. But, ) spawning must take place in flowing fresh water. Aquaculture By Johnny Foster UNC Sea Grant Previous attempts at commercial culture of pure stripers has not been profitable. Therefore, the improved survival rate and more rapid early growth of the hybrids is encouraging. The fish may develop into an especially good aquaculture species for North Carolina. The hybrid also has a good reputation and may be easier to introduce into the mass market here than other cultured species. Hie hybrids look alot like pure striped bass. The body is a little deeper and thicker than the pure strain and the stripes on its back are broken. Apparently, the hybrids grow faster than stripers for the first year or two. But, it is doubtful they will reach the maximum size of the stripers. Fingerlings are rather scarce now. I’ve read one report that estimated one - half million striped bass fingerlings were raised privately for sale to the public in 1979. Os course, millions were produced by state and federal hatcheries for stock enhancement of public waters. But, while the growout of the stripers or hybrids is much the same as catfish, the fingerling production is different. To begin with, the fingerling striper or hybrid producer may have to capture the broodstock from the wild. This is time consuming, risky and only for the ex perienced. (But, it can be fun!) Then, about five days after the eggs hatch, the fry must be fed zooplankton or be released in a fertile pond. Young do not take artificial food readily. A fertile pond contains natural zooplankton for the fry to eat. 1116 fertility must be managed and main tained. Initial stocking should be about 100,000 fry. Edenton, NC vo 482-8421 v THE CHOWAN HERALD Some insects and other animals will eat the fry, so predation must be con trolled. Disease and can nibalism can be an immense problem. Later, the fingerlings can be gradually converted over to pelleted feed. After about SO days, an average of 30,000 one - to two • inch fingerlings can be harvested per acre. Small fingerlings are usually stocked into a pond or lake. For recreational fishing, usually 5 to 100 fish between 1% inches and 2 inches are stocked per acre. For a commercial fish farm, stocking rates would be much higher. From 1,000 to 10,000 fingerlings might be stocked per acre. Os course, the fish farm would convert the fish to a pelleted commercial feed. In a recreational pond, the fish fend for themselves by eating smaller forage fish. It takes from one to two years to produce a one - pound fish. The work, at our project is being done by the Cooperative Fisheries Unit at North Carolina State University and is funded by the Sea Grant Program. The researchers are evaluating the production in dirt ponds, plastic - lined steel pools and cages suspended in a river. The hybrid production project is open to visitors. Please contact me to make an appointment to visit. According to Wise, gifts from businesses and in dividuals have extended the capacity of his institution to provide many additional services to the community which otherwise would go unmet.
