Fire Report Fire Chief Perry of the Edenton Fire Department reported that there were three fires in Edenton over the past week. The first fire was a residential fire and the other two were both industrial fires at the same location. The residential fire took place on Aug. 22 at 8:08 A.M. and was located at 311 West Church St. The owner of the property was Mrs. Hattie Johnston. The fire took place when the switch box on the hot water heater over heated and shorted out. The fire was contained to the hot water heater’s switch box. Estimated damage is less than SIOO. The two industrial fires took place at Jimbo Jumbo’s plant on Peanut Drive. The first fire at this location took place at 7:56 A.M. on Aug. 25. This fire was caused when one on the drying motors malfunctioned and ignited a canvas mat which directs the heat from the drying motor into the peanut trailers. Estimated damage of this fire was $250. The second fire which took place at Jimbo Jumbos happened on Aug. 27 around 12:51 RM. It was caused when trash from the peanuts apparently got into the roasting machine; at which time the roaster caught fire along with the peanuts that were in the roaster. The roaster suffered minor damage and was back in operation within two hours. There was around S6OO worth of damage caused by this fire and most of that was due to the lost of the peanuts in the roaster. Definition Miser: Person who lets the rest of the world go buy. Prop, Oak Harbor, Wash. Misconceptions About The Internal Revenue Over the years, many taxpayers have come to believe as fact some misconceptions about the Internal Revenue Service, possibly because the IRS is a large agency and the tax law is complex. Un fortunately, these myths and misconceptions cause needless worry. Here are some of the more common rumors, followed by the actual truth: 1. Once you’re audited, you are always on the audit list. The IRS makes a special effort NOT to audit the same people again and again. If your previous audit resulted in a no change, you should not be audited two years in a row, if the same issues are prevalent. Generally, math errors are corrected automatically by the computer and do not generate an examination. Anyone can make an honest mistake and most can be corrected with little trouble. 3. Anyone whose return is examined will end up owing more tax. No, actually almost 30 per cent of all examinations result either in a “no change” or an additional refund. That leaves more than 70 per cent that do result in additional tax. In any case, the purpose of an examination is to determine the correct tax. 4. Filing a return early means it will be examined. No. The time of year a return is filed does not determine if an examination will be made. This is true of a return filed on or about the A.M.E. Zion Homecoming The Hawkins Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church of Edenton, will be observing their Annual Homecoming Celebration on September 5. Special activity is planned The public is invited. Propaganda is often hard to define or identify.
