THE CHOWAN HERALD Page 3-B To The Editor Dear Editor: It was a real pleasure to have you as our guest last Saturday when you visited our Military Academy at Fort Bragg. The Academy is a source of pride to us, providing the North Carolina Army National Guard with well - trained junior officers and well - schooled noncommissioned officers. I know from past ex perience of your support of the National Guard and I hope that this trip enhanced your regard for it. I am most appreciative of your coverage of Guard activities in the Chowan Herald; it has been instrumental in making the National Guard a household word throughout the area and has helped considerable in strengthening Guard and family ties. The North Carolina National Guard is a fine organization; one that Washington holds in high esteem and it has caused our sister states to take notice, affording them a challenge worth competing with. It is also the largest organization within our State. We continue to work toward improvements because we want to be the best, and support such as you render contributes greatly to our success. Sincerely, William E. Ingram Major General, NCARNG Adjutant General American Legion By Jim Criddle Fair Week!!! I know the week is half gone, but that means there is still half to go. Any of you Legionaires that have some time on your hands come on out and help. If you’ve never helped at the fair before you don’t know how rewarding it can be to see someone else enjoying themselves, because of something you have helped create. If you missed our last regular meeting you-really missed a good one. The girls that went to Girls State and the boys that went to Boys State were in attendance and they each talked about their adventures at Girls & Boys State. These young men and women are really exciting and know how to tell of their experiences. I’ve listened to these people talk for the last several years and one comment that I’ve heard every year is that Thad Eure was the best speaker they have ever heard. Maybe we can get Thad to come to Chowan County in the near future Our next regular meeting will be on October sth and Dr. John Dunn, superin tendant of our Chowan County Schools will be the guest speaker. Come on out and meet Dr. Dunn and ask him your questions about our school system. Veteran’s Questions and Answers: Q How long after a veteran is discharged from active duty may he file a claim for compensation and pension? A— There is no time limit for a veteran to file for a compensation and pension after discharge from military service. Q ls there an expiration date on VA home loan benefits? A— No, loan entitlement is not subject to an ex piration date. Q May on-the-job G.I. Bill training be pursued on a part - time basis? A— No, you must use this training on a full - time basis. If you enjoy catching trout, there’s no shortage of fish in the ‘North Carolina Mountains. The State has over 2,000 miles of trout streams in western North Carolina that are open to public fishing. In addition, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission stocks about 680,000 trout in public waters each year.
