Allen Beeler The World Council of Churches (WCC) is coor dinating a World Wide Communion for the first Sunday of October on Oc tober 3. Participating in the WCC’s Communion will be thousands of denominations from over a hundred nations. When these denominations represented in human terms they mean that, there will be around a half billion individuals participating in the Com munion. -The members of the First Presbyterian Church in Eden ton will be among the Communicants for the World Wide Communion. The members of the local Presbyterian Church take special pride in their con nections with Christians around the world. The minister, Rev. Mallinson, and his wife had just returned from a world wide trip when he received the call to come to the Edenton church and several other members of the church are actively involved with Christians on a global level. Mallinson expressed that the Communion is an example of the “...oneness we have with each other as Christians; with Christ at the head of the Church.” Mallinson and the church have been receiving letters IMIEEIC . Tai Ting Chi, a Christian in the People’s Republic of China, wrote to the Edenton church, “I am very glad to see you and other loved ones together around the table of our Lord and face to face with your worship, our Lord, in the church in Edenton.” The same spirit of oneness comes from Sri Lanka where Susan and Anne the family of a missionary when they wrote, “May we take this opportunity to greet all the members of the Church. Jesus is Lord and Savior to us and He is the same yesterday, today and forever.” Many of those who wrote letters to the First Presbyterian Church had a special message to send to all Christians. Guien, a Christian from Australia, wrote “The message I want to send to Christians is to let your Faith uphold you and make you strong so that you never let another human being suffer, whatever his color or creed, for the want of the help you can give.” Sabine Friedrid a seminary student in West Germany sends the following thoughts,“We hope that it will be possible, that we get peace all over the world. We all should help, that this wish will become true. We should have peace with our neigh bors, friends, kids, parents, brothers and so 0n..." R.D. McCall and his wife from-the Republic of China wrote to remind the members of the First Presbyterian Church what the World Communion is all about. They write, “As we celebrate our Lord’s death and resurrection on World Communion Sunday we are thankful for brothers and sisters - such as you - in our Lord’s Church around his world. We count on your remembering us in prayer for the believers world - wide, and for the outreach and service which all of us have in our Lord’s name.” From these letters the message of World Wide Communion Sunday can be heard. It is a time to remember that to be a Christian is to have a pur pose in the lives of in dividuals, countries, and the world. It is also a call to action that the world may see the Christian Church is more than just a safe haven for the chosen few. People once believed that if their palmi itched they would receive money.
