Contamination of clothing
through pesticide handling
is a laundering problem.
Recent studies have shown
that once protective clothing
is contaminated, fabrics are
difficult to decontaminate
by using normal laundry
procedures. In fact, the data
show that even though
substantial amounts of
pesticide residues are
removed by laundering, the
residues that remain in the
fabric are bilolgically ac
tive.
The present study in
vestigated the effectiveness
of water temperature
variation and commercially
available deteregents on
decomtaminating clothing
subjected to methyl
parpthion (MeP). In a 2x3x4
design, two denim fabrics
were contaminated with 1.25
emulsifiable concentrate
MeP solution. Next the
fabrics were laundered in a
hot (60degrees c), warm (49
degrees c) or cold (30
degrees c) wash water
temperature using one of
four laundry detergents 1)
phosphate, 2) carbonate, 3)
inonoinic heavy duty liquid,
or AATCC Standard
Detergent 124). Laundered
fabrics and unlaundered
fabric controls were solvent
extracted, and MeP was
measured using nitrogen -
phosphorous thermionic
detection gas
chromatography. Per
centage of removal were
calculated and ANOV tested
for differences in removal.
Findings of the study
revealed the following: 1)
Fiber content of the con
taminated fabric was not a
contributing factor in MeP
removal. (Fiber content of
the two fabrics under study
were cotton and cotton
polyester fabrics). 2)
Homogeneity was found

among the four detergents
examined.
There was a definate
trend in detergency ef
fectiveness with regard to
the use of heavy duty liquid
detergent and the removal
of MeP. This finding is
consistent with other fin
dings which implies that
heavy duty liquid detergents
are noted for their oil -
removing ability. (MeP is
an oil - based derrivative.)
3) Water temperature
caused pronounced dif
ferences.
Hot water removal was
slightly higher than warm
water. Cold water was
significantly lower than hot
or warm water tem
peratures. Implications of
the study: 1) Avoid laun
dering contaminated fabric
in cold water. 2) Use a
heavy duty liquid detergent
if an emulsifiable con
centrate pesticide for
mulation is used. 3) Launder
only pesticide contaminated
clothing together. 4) Prior to
washing other clothing,
(without clothes), run the
washing machine full cycle
with detergent to reduce
chances of pesticide
residues remaining in the
washing machine drum.
