Jones is encouraging high school seniors to consider the free college education available through the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U. S. Merchant Marine- Academy. Jones stated, “In these days of higher college costs and cutbacks in federal scholarship and loan funds, it is important to remember that these institutions not only provide an outstanding undergraduate course of study at no cost at all to the student, but their graduates are prepared for lucrative employment possibilities immediately after college. Both academies are seeking applications from interested high school seniors and are particularly striving to expand their female and minority student enrollments.” Appointments to the Coast Guard Academy are ten ANNOUNCING NEW OFFICE LOCATION Marshall S. Redding, M.D. and The Albemarle Eye Care Center, Ltd. proudly announces their new location Mitchener Village, 707 N. Broad Street Edenton, N.C. effective October 10,1982 dered solely on the basis of an annual nationwide competition. There are no congressional ap pointments, state quotas or special categories. All applicants participate in the competition on an equal basis. Applications for admission are submitted directly to the Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut. After graduation, students are commissioned as officers in the United States Coast Guard. Candidates to the Mar chant Marine Academy, located at Kings Point, New York, must be nominated by a Member of Congress from their state. Candidates must be academically and physically qualified. They must compete for available vacancies from their state and must meet the stan dards for an appointment as Midshipman, United States Naval Reserve. Graduates are trained to be officers for United States merchant' vessels; although the Academy is a federal in stitution, jobs in the mer chant marine are private sector employment. Rep. Jones has alerted high school guidance counselors in the First Congressional District about the opportunities at both academies; their newest catalogues are bong sent to each high school in the First District. Detailed information on applying is contained in the catalogues. Interested students are urged to contact their counselor at the earliest possible date since the deadline for submitting applications to both academies for the class entering in the summer of 1983 is December 15, 1982.
