Page 6-A Auto Industry « Study Topic The ailing U.S. auto in dustry is the subject of a 10- part CNN exclusive report - “Detroit Fights Back.” Pulitzer-Prize winning CNN Correspondent Peter Arnett spent two months in and around Detroit compiling material and interviews for this comprehensive CNN special report. Daily segments began running on CNN October 11. An hour-long documentary incorporating them along with other unaired material will air on CNN, Saturday. Arnett interviewed top executives of the “big four” auto companies, including Henry Ford and Lee lacocca, to get their opinions on the state u. the industry. Other reports trace the growth of the U.S. auto industry - the pioneers, the breakthroughs and the challenge of foreign im ports. Japanese automaking techniques are profiled, as well as robotics and other new trends in the industry. New directions in work management and employee incentives for better productivity are discussed, as Arnett examines the quality, safety and af fordability of the U.S. automotive product. In addition, Arnett talks with automobile dealers, laid-off auto workers and industry critic Ralph Nader, to get their opinions on why the U.S. has lost the advantage in auto manufacturing that it once possessed.
