Thursday, October 28. 1982 The Carolina Review: Vote THE RASCALS...Next week,if you’re registeredand up to it, you’ll get your chance to vote the rascals out or in, depending on how you lode at things. Or don’t lode at things. A lot of people might not be up to it. In Raleigh, where the life and death of politics and politicians is admittedly always exagerated, people on the street are revealing symp toms not unknown to the coming flu season -a nervous stomach perhaps, if not outright revulsion. You may be sick of politics too. “These TV ads. I don’t like any of them on either side,” a retired state em ployee. “Ike Andrews? He was up here with me,” holding her hand an arm’s length above her head,“now?...” and the thumb plummets down ward. This from a college counselor with a degree in pschology. “So what are you going to do? Elect a Congressional Club Cobey to tell you what to do with your own body and everything else?” A grammer school teacher. An insurance agent, suggesting he might not vote for any of the politicians in any of the races, said he doesn’t “have the time to figure out which one is the least worse.” One of the best purveyors of prevailing political winds, a fifty - five year -old waitress at a favorite Raleigh breakfast spot, says “everybody’s sick of ’em.” People do seem sick of politicians in both parties and on every level. They don’t think Reagan’s in control, but they hated i Carter. Congress seems to I have followed up Koreagate 1 and Abscam with some undisguised lack of back- 1 bone in dealing with 1 potentially disastrous * problems like social 1 security. 1 North Carolinians want to I know The retired state em- * ployee says he feels like his state is developing an image < “like Maryland and New 1 FREE SIOO. Broad Street, Edenton, N.C. Jersey use to have. We’re just catching the dumb ones. I wonder what the smart ones are getting away with.” Tar Heels have had a tough two years. In 1980, they saw their top two incumbents fight fairly ugly campaigns within their own party just to keep the same office- an historical first*. V At the same time, the Congressional Club began flexing its muscles and money and engaged Democrat Bob Morgan in a muddy blitz. Emerge John East and an independent media campaign for Ronald Reagan. Sen. East immediately began a Washington on slaught to determine when “life begins.” Sen. Jesse Helms re - initiated his efforts to bring prayer back into public schools. Not long later, tobacco and peanut support programs became en dangered species. The political blame and coun terblame was enough to kill anything that grows. Two years pass and today we have the “tobacco tax twins” and still don’t know when life begins or whether to pray in school or not. Sec. of Natural Resources Howard Lee, a Democrat under Gov. Hunt, was ac cused of mismanagement and worse. The state’s leading union leader went to jail. Lee went home. Throw in the bid - rigging shell game, with high - salaried pillars of the community going to jail. But no politicians involved? Democratic Lt. Gov. Jimmy Green received a gift of almost $5,000 and free paving from a bid - rigger, but was guilty of no wrongdoing. With the negative publicity, though, the Democratic - controlled General Assembly im mediately passed legislation to make sure state em ployees tßat take gifts will tbe punished. Not state elected oficials. Now, take that same General Assembly and try to put together a re - s districting plan -a chore that required three extra : sessions and not just a few ' taxpayer financed lawyers. 1 Bring the Legislature back also to finish the 1 budgetary session that once required a couple of months every couple of years. I Os course, one of the reasons that original budgetary session took so long was the epic battle over 1 the condition of the state’s roads and the gasoline tax to fix them. Much of that battle and dialogue was between Democratic governor Jim Hunt and Washington senator Jesse Helms in preparation for a 1984 Senate race. Tar Heels also got a peak at some ERA and anti - ERA, some Christian schools and moral majority, Greensboro communists and Klan and whatever else. And PCB. So now Tar Heels can get ready to vote on the heels of Colcor where 26 people, including elected and public officials, are being arrested and found guilty of fraud and influence peddling and anything else. Several North Carolina legislators are in trouble and at least one is under investigation. A North Carolina Congressman was arrested for DUI and more. His opponent has been accused of conning the public into contributing to a tax - free foundation so he could con tinue to campaign without having to work for a living. If you’re up to it, maybe you better vote. lift at once and the cat only uses one paw at a time.
