Thursday, October 28, l«B2 Weyerhaeuser Highlights New papermaking technology designed to improve product quality, machine energy efficiency and team productivity will be installed on Plymouth’s N.C. 1 linerboard machine. Installation begins November l and will require 25 days to complete, ac cording to Fred Willimas, paperboard superintendent. The device to be installed in called ENP, or extended nip press. It improves and increases the paper machine's sheet drying capability be expanding a critical surface called the “nip” by papermakers. It is an area where water is squeezed from the sheet of paper or paparboard. “Conventional wet pressing involves a series of roll presses to squeeze the water out”, says Williams. In the extended nip press we replace one of the rolls with a curved pressure shoe. That gives us a wider, more efficient nip area. The sheet stays under pressure a longer time and we get more water out”, Williams concluded. The ENP technology was developed jointly by Weyerhaeuser and Beloit, a major supplier of machinery and hardware to the pulp and paper industry. The extended nip press for Plymouth is one of three purchased by the company. “We never like to take down time, says Paper borad Production Manager, Bill Redd, but when we do, we want to make sure we get a payback like the one we’ll get hare: improved quality, improved energy efficiency and improved produc tivity.” Three Weyerhaeuser foresters active in the company’s Tree Farm Family program came home winners from the recent Chapel Hill meeting of the N.C. State Tree Farm Committee.
