Letters To The Chowan Herald Editor PENC | Dear Sir: "Diere is an alternative for educators in North Carolina who are concerned about the direction taken professional organizations over the past number of years. Professional Educators of North Carolina (PENC) was chartered by the state of North Carolina on November 20, 1979. Since that time there has been a steady growth in the organization. Educators must protect their freedom to decide for themselves which organization to join and support. Educators must provide an uninterrupted education for the students. Educators must work in a way of cooperation, rather than confrontation, with elected officials to achieve the best possible education for students. Educators must continue working for professional status and professional compensation. If you believe that these are the goals educators must seek in North Carolina, I invite you to request further information by contacting PENC at P.O. Box 221374, Charlotte, N.C. THE CHOWAN HERALD , Sincerely, Preston Guiton President Thank You Sheriff Troy Toppin Chowan County Sheriff’s Department Edenton, North Carolina Dear Sheriff Toppin: We at Dickerson, Inc. would like to take this op portunity to thank you and your men for the com mendable job they did concerning the recent in cident at our office in Edenton. You and deputies Evans, Byrum, and Rice demon strated a high degree of professionalism and a genuine concern for our problems. We certainly feel that you and your people are an asset to our community and we commend you for a job well done. Sincerely, John D. Smith Assistant Vice President Dickerson, Inc. Craftsmen Dear Editor: Many times we have heard the statement about a particular craft lost to our past. This is being changed somewhat by a group of approximately 30 talented artists and craftsmen, who have united together to form the first area Roanoke Arts and Crafts Guild. Originality and creativeness, materials used, workmanship, design, utility and color were some of the criteria the screening committee used to deter mine the acceptance of the Guild members. The Bertie and Martin County Guild was inspired from the heritage of our past skilled ancestors handing down the art of their old crafts. This has been taught to the participant through iuniilywnd friends aad«l§»> from felt «Nft#*c&&££ promoted by the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service. Ex tension Agents, Ila Parker and Linda Boyette, responded to request and saw the need for con centrated workshop leader training in crafts to keep our past traditions alive. Their encouragement and guidance has led to the very first Roanoke Arts and Crafts Guild. Arts and Crafts being demonstrated and sold are banners, baskets, coimtry decorating accessories, crossstitch, dolls, fabric, leather and stuffed crafts, macrame, pressed flowers, quilted pillows and new quilts, sewing crafts, stained glass, oil paintings, stencil fabrics, weaving, tin punch and wood crafts. This will be an annual event with the first one to be held in Williamston at the High School Cafeteria, November 13, 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. and November 14, 1 P.M. to 6 P.M. There will be a small 50 cents admission with the Martin County Extension Homemakers providing home baked goods at a concession booth. Everyone is invited to come and share in our past.
