Cotton Yield Is Up
Florence, SC —lt is
already apparent that yields
in North Carolina will be as
good, if not be ter, than last
year’s all-time record high of
558 pounds of lint par acre.
USDA’s Crop Reporting
Board on October 1 estimated
yields for this year at 567
pounds per acre; and this be
ing only an estimate, the final
tally could bery well be even
higher. Quality is also high
except for grade, which has
been a problem this year
throughout the rain grown
production areas of the
United States. Prices have
been a disappointment; but
when compared to other
crops, they look a little better.
Mr. Warren Deviney, Area
Director of the USDA’s cotton
marketing services office in
Florence, South Carolina,
reported a steady flow of sam
ple receipts for classification
last week. Grades were about
the same as the previous

Social Security: Household Workers
The earnings of household
workers, such as maids,
cooks, gardeners, and regular
babysitters is usually covered
by Social Security.
Anyone who pays a
household worker at least SSO
in cash wages during a calen
dar quarter is required to
deduct Social Security taxes
and report the wages.
A quarter refers to the
3-month periods ending
March 31, June 30, September
30, or December 31.
The SSO also includes any
cash given the worker to
cover the cost of carfare,
meals, or a room.
Failure to report these
wages on time could result in
a penalty being assessed and
added to the taxes due.
Some special situations are
exceptions to the general rule.
Payments to a son or
daughter under 21 years of
age or to a husband or wife for
household work are not
covered under Social Securi
ty and should not be reported.
All wages paid workers
employed by a hotel or room
inghouse must be reported
even if they amount to less
than SSO a quarter.
The only information the
employer needs for each
worker is his or her name, ad
dress, Social Security
