Page 6-A Carolina Review COLCOR.The ongoing Coleor investigation “reached out and touched someone” again last week. For the second time since the now 26 indictments began breaking, Lt. Gov. Jimmy Green was the focus of attention. During more Colcor sentencing testimony last week, a friend and only apparent associate of Great, Howard Watts of Green’s hometown (Clarkton), was heard on tape. Speaking of Sandy White, Jr., a man who has held legitimate jobs for Green in Clarkton previously, Watts said, “He’s known as a torch man for Jimmy Green.” For those few unschooled in such matters, the torch man is usually hired to set fires so that the “victim” can collect insurance money. He is an arsonist whose crimes sometimes result in loss of life. As one might imagine, such a statement by Watts is ex tremely serious. In this particular in stance, the charge is all the more serious because White, and Watts too for that matter, have already been found as party to the in tentional burning of Sen. Monk Harrington’s tobacco warehouses in Bertie County. Those burnings however, were apparently for revenge and punitive damages on behalf of Rep. Ron Taylor. Taylor got 20 years for his part. Green denied the validity of Watts’ statement and, in fact, so did Watts later. The lieutenant governor went further with his denial by issuing an ominous warning to newspapers that printed the story that they did so “at their own risk.” This was possibly a veiled threat of courtsuits to follow, a tact he has never used in the past with his semingly never - baizes with tbs press Don daily newspaper responded by citing a long history of fires in Green - held properties, in eluding 7 fires in 26 years.
