Thursday. Novomlx ; i>. .etter To The Editor Dear Editor: November 2nd, which resulted in the election of all Democratic candidates, was a true indication of the power of the Democratic Party in the First Congressional District. This successful vic tory is a direct result of your dedicated efforts and those of the Democratic Precinct Chairmen. Never before in my 40 years of public service have I witnessed a greater ef fort on the part of the County Chairmen, especially in the areas of explaining the issues on a one-on-one basis, voter registration, carrying the Democratic cause directly to the people, and the “get out the vote” campaign than in the 1982 general election. Never before have I been more proud of the 21 Democratic Executive Com mittee Chairmen in the First Congressional District. We have observed during the past two years a constant deterioration in the national economy, increased unemployment, declining farm prices, business failures, and farm bankrupt cies. Your efforts were ob viously a labor of love and real concern for the future of America. Through your ef forts we have taken the first step toward making a better way of life not only for ourselves but for our children and future generations. Arthur Miller 400th Anniversary In 1984 By Glenn Mays Travel Editor A three-year birthday par ty in North Carolina will celebrate one of the most significant events in history beginning in 1984. Though the celebration will not be limited to North Carolina’s boundaries it will recall events of 400 years ago when the first attempts by the English to settle the New World were made on Roanoke Island, on what now is known as the Outer Banks. The Roanoke Voyages dur ing the period of 1584-87 brought two colonies to the New World as well as other explorers to what was termed by one as the “goodliest land under the cope of heaven.” Such names as Sir Walter Raleigh, Ralph Lane, John White, Virginia Dare, Wueen Elizabeth I, Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe, Manteo and Wanchese were some of the central figures in this first experiment in English col onization of the New World. Though the experiment did not succeed totally, it did show the feasibility of such a venture and years later the English established a perma nent colony in Jamestown, Virginia. Those first attempts at set tlement left a mark on history as well as creating one of the world’s greatest unsolved mysteries - that being the disappearance of the second THE CHOWAN HERALD colony which was established in 1587. That became known as “the lost colony” and has been dipicted in the nation’s oldest outdoor symphonic drama, Paul Green’s “The Lost Colony”, now in its 42nd season. The 400th birthday party will include a celebration in England in April 1984 when representatives from North Carolina will visit that coun try to commemorate the departure of the first of the Roanoke Voyages from Plymouth, England. In North Carolina a replica of the ship on which the first colonists sailed to the New World will be constructed in the coming months. Visitors to the Manteo waterfront will be able to watch the construction. When complete the shop will sail to North Carolina ports which can handle its eight-foot draft. The ship will be permanently berthed in Manteo and will be an official state historic site. A host of other events, all across North Carolina, will be part of this celebration which will end in August 1987 on the 400th anniversary of the birth day of Virginia Dare, first English child born in the New World. That’s when the last of the 400 candles on the birth day cake will be extinguished. mm b fl b b l B A* Get 15% interest on 7-Day Certificates between now and December 14, 1982 * • When your 7-Day Certificate matures on or after December 14, you can convert it to Peoples new high interest Money Market 1 Access Account. i • Each depositor is insured up to SIOO,OOO I by FDIC. k • $20,000 minimum deposit. m Peoples Bank Member FDIC 1 ' ■ jfl kk H > bHB 1 %jßWßkpiife£B . 4bbhhf - '^^kkkkkP^^' •i- Substantial penalty for early withdrawal. Wallio Field Representative Some books sold as Social Security information are useful, but there are others that are inaccurate, misleading, overpriced, and deceptively advertised. The Social Security Ad ministration does not discourage the sale of commercial publications. At the same time, we do not endouse any non - government publications. Accurate, up - to - dale publications and other in formation about Social Security are available free at the Elizabeth City Social Security office. Social Security pamphlets are organized and illustrated in a different way from most commercial books. Some of them are well done, but the information in them is not “secret” or “inside.” The family of Chet White would like to express their appreciation to everyone for the many kindnesses shown them at the loss of their loved one. We want to especially thank everyone for the prayers, food, flowers, phone calls, cards and many other expressions of love. The Family Nov.2s.pd. If advertising suggests this is so, the advertising is false. Some advertising hints that a publisher has an official connection with the Social Security Ad ministration and has access to people’s Social Security records. That is never true. No advertiser has access to other people’s Social Security records. Social Security records are confidential under the law. Dramatic claims for books can be misleading. For example, one ad vertisement says readers will learn “how to collect S3OO a month from Social Security at age 30 while you are working full time.” The book tells you what any Social Security office will tell you without charge: If a young father and mother are both working under Social Security and one dies, or becomes disabled, their children may get monthly Social Security payments even if the other parent works full time.
