Otto had an uncle in
America who wrote letters
saying that in America there
anas food for everyone. Otto,
longed to go to this wondrous
dace, but there seemed no
bope. In 1915, his mother died
gnd all of the children were
farmed out to relatives. For
Otto, the miracle happened:
His Uncle Peter in America
sent for him.
APLENTY-There was
food aplenty in America, but
there were difficulties too.
The boy found learning
English heartbreakingly
Slow, particularly since it was
not spoken in Uncle Peter’s
home. But Otto managed, and
when grown he began to
wander around the country,
performing first one menial
job and then another. It was
then that he became aware
but life in America was more
than having enough to eat. He
saw deeper things: Freedom
from eternal fear and from
Suspicion; fredom, in its
larger sense, of which most
people in Europe had never
dreamed. Small towns in
America were worlds in
themselves, built around
families and friends;
Otto worked hard, and sav
ed his money. He married the
daughter of an Irish railroad
foreman. And then he learned
of a place that offered him an
opportunity to strike out on
his own. He rushed home to
tell his wife: “Five thousand
rples,” said Otto, “and on
one good restaurant. Is
place I have been looking
for."
but this was in the middle of
World War 11, and equipment
for a restaurant was hard to
come by. Oto was not known
in the town, and credit was
not easily obtained.
Moreover, the little town did
not really accept a stranger
who spoke only broken
English. But Otto overcame
all of this—and managed even
to get together sufficient food,
despite the wartime ration
ing, to make ready for his
grand opening on Thanksgiv
ing Day.
GUESTS?-He appeared
before the town’s
businessman’s club, and
blissfully unaware that his

broken English only annoyed
them, Otto said that on his
opening day he wanted them
to be his guests. They would
eat all they could, at his ex
pense. But the town’s
businessmen were not to be
taken in by such obvious
scheme to promote business.
Among themselves they
agreed to boycott Otto’s
place, to freeze him out.
A day or two before the
opening a woman tapped on
Otto’s lunchroom door. “I’m
soliciting contributions for
our annual Thanksgiving
baskets to the poor,” she told
him. Otto was amazed. He
could not comprehend that
there were hungry people in
the town. Hie woman told him
all about it.
Otto pushed the door open
wide. “Come in, please,” he
said.
The following day, Otto ap
peared once more before the
businessmen. Apologetically
he told them that his invita
tion to them must be
withdrawn. Not only would
there be no free meals; there
would be no meals at all, and
his opening must be postpon
ed. He had filled too many
Thanksgiving baskets for the
poor. There were not enough
ration stamps left to replenish
his larder.
SILENCE—There was a
momentary silence, everyone
avoiding everyone else’s
glance. Why, someone finally
asked, had he done such a
foolish thing just as he was
ready to open? He had wish
ed, he answered, to help feed
the poor people of the town in
the memory of his grand
mother who had starved to
death in Greece the year
before. “Before she is bury,”
Otto said, “the doctors make
the - the post mortem. In the
stomach of my grandmother
they find grass and bark.”
Otto Dmytryk swallowed
hard as he had said it. Then he
went on: “Why I have done
this? Because I wish I can be
a part of the reason why in
America there is no hungry
peoples.”
Nobody knows exactly what
happened in the,next 24 hours~*
Suddenly, the people of the
community pooled their ra
tion stamps and took them to
Otto. Otto had his opening - on
schedule. The townspeople
flocked to eat with Otto. He
became a successful
restaurant operator.
Because he opened his
heart, be became a citizen of
Janesport - and a citizen of
America. And both he and his
fellow citizens were thankful
for their blessings.
Happy Thanksgiving to you
and yours.

The first English attempts
at colonization are portrayed
in the new book offered by the
Department of Cultural
Resources Historical Publica
tions Section. Fifteen
documents, in the words of
the explorers involved, depict
in detail the Roanoke Voyages
in the new volume entitled
“The First Colonists:
Documents on the Planting of
the First English Settlements
in North America, 1584-1590.”
From the depth of the water
where explorers waded
ashore to curiosity about the
Indians to the search for the
Lost Colony - the documents
offer a chronicle of the
English expeditions that led to
the colonization of the New
World.
The 199-page volume edited
by Dr. David B. Quinn and
Alison M. Quinn is called “an
authentic voice of the traveler
-a narrative of overseas ex
ploration.” The 15 documents
range from Arthur Barlowe’s
narrative of his 1584 explora
tion to John White’s narrative
of his desperate search for
members of the Lost Colony
in 1590.
The first English dukedom
was created when King

Duke of Cornwall —a title
retained today by Prince
Charles.
