Thursday. December 9. 1982 Carolina Review FOOTBALL...In Raleigh, people are really ticked off by the firing of two winning foot ball coaches in less than an honorable and genteel manner. DUKE...Red Wilson, of course, was fired by Duke athletic director Tom Butters a couple of weeks ago. Wilson had just coached the first back-to-back winning season (6-Ss) for the Blue Devils in 20 years, including a season finale win over Carolina. Butters refused to discuss his reasoning for Wilson’s dismissal, but he and Duke of ficials eased the pain by offer ing the likeable coach a p.r. job with Duke Medical Center The coach accepted. Since Butters won’t talk, and since Wilson seemed a shoo-in after the Carolina vic tory, the rumors for the firing have been rampant and the speculation best described as dreadful. One of the least base rumors seems to be that But ters considered offensive coach Steve Spurrier as the man responsible for Duke’s recent fairly good fortunes. Spurrier quit at the end of the season to take a pro head coaching job with the new USFL. Spurrier did seem to be an excellent offensive coach, but really, that should reflect well on Wilson’s ability to sur round himself with good assistants. One wag dismissed Spur rier’s talent with the pointed observation that “anybody could put together a great of fense with Bennet and Castor.’’ Talented passing quarterback Len Bennet and flash receiver Chris Castor have been awarded “all everything” this season. N.C. STATE...Monte Kif fin’s removal at State might not have been so very dif ferent from the Duke situa tion. That is, in the final analysis, it wasn’t the wins and losses as much as how each coach was perceived by the administrations that to) after being strung out (and wrung out) over the past few weeks and much of the season. In three years, he had two winning seasons (6-sss), but no win over Carolina. Coach Kiffin came to State with excellent credentials after interning at the Cadilac programs of Nebraska and Arkansas as a defensive coor dinator. Lou Holtz at Arkan sas, and of course, formerly of State, highly recommend ed Kiffin, And Kiffin’s en thusiasm largely resembled Holtz at State-though admit tedly Holtz was more witty. Although Holtz maybe just seemed funnier because he won more. Anyway, people started complaining that Kiffin played the clown’s role too much, and apparently athletic director Willis Casey took the complaints seriously. But Casey may have had more to do with State’s pro blems than Kiffin. Afterall, who scheduled power-houses like Miami of Florida and Penn State along with Maryland, Clemson, and UNC-the teams that ac counted for Kiffin’s five defeats this year. NOW...WeII, both coaches are gone and maybe the reasons confidentially are valid. But Wilson’s unwarned firing on the night of his finest victory, and Kiffin’s forced resignation after week’s of ugly and protracted discus sion, suggest that a careful evaluation of both of the athletic director’s perfor mances are needed too.
