Page 10-A Compliance Is Requested RALEIGH—The N.C. Department of Transporta tion Division of Motor Vehicles is working with the trucking industry, organiza tions and individual truckers in a cooperative effort to en courage compliance with the legal weight limits on North Carolina’s highways. The fall harvest season is underway and DMV is con cerned that farmers may in advertently overload their trucks. Overloaded trucks cause damage to the state’s highways and create A ~ ards to other feks with heavy loads can create for other shifting can fall on the ly loaded vehicles amount of damage toflpe highways and makes safer. Motor Vehicles ConWiis sioner R.W. Wilkins Jr. ex plained, “An education pro gram has been initiated to educate truckers of existing legal weight limits, proper loading, and the achievement of even distribution of weights to meet legal requirements. In inviting the program, we are helping truckers to com ply with the laws avoiding penalties.” Truckers are required to comply with three different weight laws. First, a license plate must be purchased to cover the empty weight of the vehicle plus the maximum load carried. Secondly, the trucker must comply with ax le weight laws. The third law establishes the maximum amount that a truck can weight and this is determined by the number of axles. These maximum weights are applicable to all highways 1 bridges except those that restricted. Restricted mghways and bridges are dearly marked and indicate the maximum allowable weight. Violations of the weight laws result in substantial monetary penalties computed on rates per pound over the limits. , Weight limits are important n that they help protect N C.’s existing highways from further deterioration. This results in less money be u . pent to maintain the highway system.
