Disappointing Year For Farmers

As we close the books on
1982, one thing is for certain -
it was a disappointing year
for farmers. Cattle prices
never achieved levels hoped
for, and grain, cotton, and
soybean prices trended lower
most of the year. As a matter
of a fact, all of agriculture has
felt the effects of a depressed
economy.
Far too often farm people
are pictured as downbeat and
pessimistic, and there are
times when many farmers
are like that. This certainly
qualifies as one of those
times, and farmers would
have every right to be cynical
and pessimistic, given the
current farm economy.
However, despite the com
plex risks of modern
agriculture, we believe the
majority of farmers still re
tain an intensely positive at
titude toward their occupa
tion. After a bad year, most
are quick to “snap back” and
look forward to a better year
“next year.”
To say that farmers have
problems in agriculture is an
understatement, but we

trade policies to expand pro
fitable trade in foreign
markets using production
that is in excess of our
domestic needs.
We must change the think
ing of our governmental
leadership and the consumer
to let them lenow that the
American farmer cannot any
longer financially operate on
a cheap food policy and sell
their produce below the coat
of production. They must
realize that a viable
agricultural industry is
necessary for the economic
well-being of those outside the
production areas of
agriculture.
We have our share of pro
blems, but problems also pre
sent opportunities - the oppor
tunity for fanners to help
shape events - to have a big
hand in improving this state
and nation - and to have a
deep feeling of satisfaction in
doing it.
