(Photo by Clay Roberts) Blind Trainees Being Sought KINSTON The Lions In dustries for the Blind made steady progress on its con tracts for gunswabs and wooden pallets during January, but more blind trainees are sought to meet the sheltered workshop load during the next quarter, Ex ecutive Director W. C. Boone told the Board of Directors in luncheon session here February 8. Chairman Mar vin L. Nash presided. Secretary Carey B. Washburn, who offered the in vocation, reviewed the January minutes, which were approved. Treasurer Milton G. Williams reviewed the financial statement for the period. It showed a stronger position than it did on January 1. All bills are cur rent. The report was approv ed and Director Boone was thanked for his diligence in bringing steady improvement to the agency’s fiscal status and net worth. Boone reported 26 persons now work at the shop. These Child Care Tax Deductible GREENSBORO - Thanks to a recent change in the law, many working parents in North Carolina can now claim a tax credit of up to 30 per cent of qualifying expenses they pay for the care of their children while the parents are at work, the Internal Revenue Service says. It’s called “Child Care and Dependent Care Credit” and is subtracted directly from the income owed. Last year, more than 100,000 North Carolina families claimed the credit, saving more than S2O-million in taxes, the IRS said. This year that dollar figure will surely increase. The credit has been increased to a range of 20 to 30 per cent of the first $2,400 of qualifying child care expenses for one Forestry Map Published A new National Forest visitor guide map has recent ly been printed by the Na tional Forests in North Carolina. This map includes all four National Forests; from the Croatan on the coast, the Uwharrie in the Pied mont, to the Pisgah and Nan tahala National Forests in the western mountains. Incorporating all major highways and secondary roads for the areas around New Bern, Troy and Asheboro, Brevard, Marion, Hot Springs, Burnsville, Franklin, Highlands, Rob binsville and Murphy where National Forests exist, this map locates and describes 76 significant recreation oppor tunities on the 1,200,000 acres of National Forest lands in North Carolina. Travel Bill Is Introduced WASHINGTON, D.C.- Honorable Walter B. Jones (D-N.C.), Chairman of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee, Feb. 3 introduced legislation pro viding for selective pre appointment travel to the Coast Guard Academy for cadet applicants. The bill, H.R. 1256, authorizes the Coast Guard to pay travel expenses for selected cadet applicants who desire to visit the Coast Guard Academy before deciding to accept appointments. The purpose of these visits is to in crease the acceptance rate of tendered appointments and to decrease the attrition rate of those applicants who have entered the Academy. THE CHOWAN HERALD include 15 blind persons, four visually handicapped, two non-blind persons and six trainee clients. There are 21 involved in production and four staff personnel. The N.C. Division of Services for the Blind is coordinating its ef forts to locate and place more blind trainees at the workshop, which can now handle up to 20 clients, it was stated. The workshop is in com pliance with OSHA in all safe ty regulations. Boone is work ing to close the gap of four points in the required ratio of blind to sighted personnel to maintain eligibility on Na tional Industries for the Blind contracts. He thanked Gover nor Richard Kerr of Lions District 31-H for gifts totaling some $2,100 from many of the 53 clubs in the 14-county district. This is part of the $2 member that Lions pledge yearly to support the non profit workshop here, it was stated. child and $4,800 of expenses for two or more children. The percentage is based on the family’s adjusted gross in come, since the rate of credit is reduced by one percentage point for each $2,000 of income above SIO,OOO, until it reaches 20 per cent for incomes over $28,000. To qualify for the credit, the taxpayer must have a paying job or be actively looking for work and must maintain a household for a dependent under age 15. For further information on the new provisions of the Child Care Credit, order the free IRS Publication, “Child and Disabled Dependent Care,” on the toll-free line 1-800-241-3860 or on the order coupon in the tax forms package. From the Tidelands Trail at Cedar Point on the eastern most Croatan National Forest to the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and Slickrock Wilderness Area on the Ten nesse - North Carolina line in the west, this map includes campgrounds, picnic areas, trail, swimming and boating opportunities available. Historical and background in formation on other National Forest features, such as the Cradle of Forestry, is also included. In handy pocket-size, this map is now available free at the National Forests in North Carolina headquarters at 50 South French Broad Avenue, P.O. Box 2750, Asheville, N.C. 28802. Copies may be ordered by mail. Past experience with two privately-funded programs providing pre-appointment visits indicates that such visits are extremely effective and efficient with respect to acceptance and attrition. However, private source fun ding is insufficient to meet present needs. H.R. 1256 will remedy this situation by authorizing up to $20,000 per year for the first five fiscal years after enactment. H.R. 1256 was co-sponsored by Congressman Gory E. Studds (D-Mass), Edwin For sythe (R-N.J.), and Don Young (R-Alaska).
