Thursday. February 24, 1983 Funds Receive *.} v. •• v ;• ■ A Boost RALEIGH - Transportation services to the state's handicapped and elderly will receive a boost from $624,000 in federal funds currently available under the Urban Mass transportation Administration’s Section 1 16(b) (2) program. The funds are for use by private nonprofit agencies to provide human service transportation to elderly and handicapped citizens across the state. In a Feb. 8 letter to local government leaders and private nonprofit agencies, state Secretary of Transpor tation W. R. Roberson, Jr. said a that the department’s Public Transportation Divi sion was accepting applica tions for the funds. The funds will provide 80 per cent of capital equipment costs such as vehicles, wheelchair lifts, mobile radios and related equipment to the agencies. The ramain ing 20 per cent will be split equally between the depart ment and local agencies. In his letter, Roberson said that the objective of the pro gram was to “improve the mobility of elderly and han dicapped persons served by private nonprofit organiza tions where existing transpor tation services are ‘unavailable, insufficient or inappropriate.’” “Achievement of this objec tive in an efficient and cost ef fective manner requires com prehensive, coordinated and continuing planning at the local level,” Roberson added. According to Secretary Roberson, every effort will be made to protect the interest of existing private transit and paratransit operators. “Applicants must make ar rangements to assure that local private operators (taxi companies, for example) have sufficient opportunity to compete for the provision of services proposed by the private nonprofit organiza tion,” he said. Applications for Section 16 Tb)(2) funding must be ding tod I of the department’s Division of Public Transportation. “The department an ticipates a record level of re quests for funds this year,” King said. Agencies requiring further information should contact Toni Tupponce, 16(b)(2) Coordinator, Public Transportation Division, N.C. Department of Transporta tion, P.O.
