If your child suddenly an
nounces the arrival of a
make-believe friend, don’t be
upset. Imaginary friends are
common among two-to-five
year olds, especially when
they need help coping with a
problem.
For example, these make
believe friends often appear
when a child is left behind
after playmates start school,
or if there’s nobody to play
yrith. And sometimes
preschoolers use these make
believe companions to get at
tention. Or they may invent
friends as a means of learning
more about themselves. In
this case, the make-believe
friend helps a child learn to
express his feelings in words.
Now some of these im
aginary friends stay for a long
time - others leave within a
few days. But whatever the
length of their stay, you as a
parent, need to be calm, ac
cept the friends and listen to
your child.
Try to decide why your
child needed a make-believe
friend. Then decide whether
or not you need to take action.
If your child wants to spend
more time with you, try to in
volve him in some of your dai
ly activities. And if he needs
a good listener, take time to
bear him out.
Once the need that forced
the arrival of the make
believe friend is taken care of,
your youngster won’t need
that imaginary playmate any
longer. And someday that
make-believe companion will
just disappear; probably
never to be heard from again.
