Roger Whitley, Jr., age 66, of Tarboro died March 12 at Edgecombe General Hospital after an illness of several weeks. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired mail car rier for the U.S. Postal Service. 6 Survivors include his wife; Geraldine Smith Whitley, two brothers; Robert Whitley of Edenton and Charles Whitley of Portsmouth, Va., and a daughter Mrs. Jerry Whitley Bobbitt of Hope Mills, NC. He is also survived by three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Howard Presbyterian Church on March 14 at 2:30 P.M. The Rev. Billy Wooten officiated at the funeral. McGowan Mary Allie McGowan, age 77, of Plymouth, N.C. died March 13 at Chowan Hospital after a prolonged illness. She was a retired employee of Wachovia Bank and was a member of Plymouth United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. She was the wife of Dr. Claudis McGowen, deceased and the daughter of JoAnna Smithwick Harden and E.W. Harden both also deceased. Surviving are two sisters; Mrs. Hilda H. Waters of Jamesville, and Mrs. Marie H. Gurlcin of Plymouth; and three brothers; Grandy Harden of Pope, Miss., Bill R. Harden of Plymouth, and Bob W. Harden of Jamesville. Funeral services were con ducted on Tuesday, March 15 at 2 P.M. at Plymouth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Pullman of ficiating. Burial followed at Hillside Memorial Gardens. Lennon James Alton Lennon, age 2f, of 510 Birmingham Ave. died March 12 in a hospital after a boating accident on Friday. He was a native of Raleigh and had previously lived in Chesapeake, Va. He was a commercial fisherman and was a member of Pine Valley Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vina Amin Lennon; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Lennon of Cape Colony, Edenton; one sister, Mrs. LaDonna Lennon Hollowell of Edenton; and grandparents, Mrs. Catherine K. Foy of Wilmington, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Aldridge of LaGrange and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Hester of Bladenboro. Holmes swept the competition held at East Carolina Univer sity on March 4. Winners were: Angela Layden— Runner up trophy in General Merchandising and proficien cy award; Sherlynne Jordan—District winner trophy & Occupational Exam trophy and proficiency award in Food Marketing; June Jordan—Occupational Exam trophy and proficiency award in Restaurant Marketing; Jon McClure—Promotion trophy and proficiency award in General Merchandising; Tammy Bachman— Proficiency award in Restaurant Marketing; Sharon Hollowell—Runner up trophy, Occupational Exam trophy, and proficiency award in Food Marketing; and Paul Stallings— Proficiency award in Genef|tl Merchandising. » The students participating in the student-faculty basket ball game on March 9 at the Holmes gymnasium trampled all over the teachers par ticipating. Os course I am pre judiced as I am a student. In reality the scores for the two games were not that widely spread. The female students defeated the female faculty by a score of 13-17. And the male students defeated the male faculty by a score of 63-64. In the first game of baseball season the Edenton Aces defeated Currituck 5-2. HOSA students attended a district workshop at J.H. Holmes High School’s DECA Club attended the District Competitive Events held in Greenville. Mrs. Sah dra Faircloth, Holmes DECA advisor presided over the Food Marketing Contest. Sharon Hollowell, District 1 Vice President, introduced the keynote speakers of the evening, Mr. Ken Smith of Williams ton and Ms. Sybil Wilson of Raleigh. Contests entered were: General Merchandising, Food Marketing, and Restaurant Marketing. The following students were recognized dur ing the awards ceremony. Angela Layden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dickie Layden, won a runnerup trophy and a proficiency award in the General Merchandising category. Angela is employed by TG&Y.
