played Tuesday night at 8:00.
The regular season begins
next week with games being
played on Monday through
Wednesday nights at Ear
nhart fields and Thursday
‘ night games at the Chowan
field at Chowan Jr. High
School.
There are seven women’s
teams participating in this
year’s league. Games will be
played on Tuesday and Thurs
day sights at Earnhart fields
and on Tuesday. nights at
Chowan. The women will
have a pre-season tourna
ment the week of May
2 on Tuesday and Thursday
night.
Schedules for both leagues
can be picked up at the
Recreation Department.
Aerobic Exercise Class
It’s time now to get in shape
for the summer and warm
weather and the best way to
do it is to get involved in the
aerobic exercise class at the
Recreation Department.
Classes are held every Mon
day and Wednesday night
from 6:00-7:00 and every
Tuesday and Thursday mor
ning from 10:00-11100. Julie
Spivey is the class instructor
and wishes to invite any lady
interested. You may call Julie

Twenty-eight tennis players
turned out to match their
skills in the Recreation
Department’s first tourna
ment of the summer. In the
men’s A flight singles Joey
Towe defeated Mark
Noneman 6-3, 6-4 and in the
men’s C flight singles Sean
Jackson defeated Richard
Bunch 6-4.64. The women’s B

Film Series
To Be Shown
“The Believer and His Men
tal Health,” a unique film
series featuring Dr. Richard
Dobbins, will be presented
every Sunday evening in May
at the First Assembly of God
in Edenton. Each of the five
featured films is approx
imately 45 minutes long and
deals with a different area of
mental health.
Dr. Dobbins is a widely
recognized Christian
psychologist, author and
counselor. He is also founder
and president of “EMERGE”
ministries of Akron, Ohio;
and senior editor of “GROW”,
a monthly publication featur
ing Christ-centered counsel.
The five subjects dealt with
in the films go right to the
very heart of a person’s
search for happiness. They
focus on the believer and his
self-concept, fear, anger, guilt
and depression. Each film
traces the development of the
emotion from its expression
and emphasizes what the Bi
ble has to say about the sub
ject. Information from the
behavioral sciences com
municated in these films is
consistent with Scripture and
provides additional
understanding of the origins
of our emotions and
guidelines to determine when
they are serving us in healthy
ways.
Each service begins
promptly at 7 P.M. The public
is cordially invited to attend.

As the weather clears off
and warms up (hopefully),
peanuts will be planted for the
1988 season. Usually at this
time most of the peanut land
has already been prepared
and ready for planting but
this year the rains have
prevented farmers from even
starting on much of their
land.
I When peanuts do get
started we can expect to see
| many of the same pest pro
! blems we have seen in the
| past and when it comes to
! diseases we will probably see
more of Black Root Rot. This

District will join the nation
wide celebration of Soil
' Stewardship Week to take
place on May 615,1983, accor
, ding to an announcement by

! Chairman. The theme of this
! year’s celebration is “Living
, Waters." “One of our more
. compelling social and
’ economic needs is for a full
, appreciation of the true value
| of our abundant supply of
water. It is time to think
seriously about conservation,
, pollution, priority usuage and
’ our dependence upon it,” says
. Harrell.

Conservation Districts
, (NACD) has sponsored Soil
| Stewardship Week since 1955,
| in cooperation with the na
, tion’s nearly 3,000 soil and
water Conservation districts.

has been distributed by the
( Chowan District to churches
{ in the county participating in
this observance.
Around The Chowan County Farms -
disease has been on the in
crease across' the North
Carolina - Virginia peanut
growing area because there
has not been any control up
till now.
Last year a new variety
was introduced called NCBC
which is resistant to this
disease. The resistance is
found in the roots which tend
to resist the entrance of the
disease organism from the
soil. The resistance depends
on a healthy root, so if there
are damaging nematodes
feeding on the roots they will
create an entrance path for

Rot and good results can be
expected if nematodes are not
a problem or if they are
controlled.
Chemical fumigants are
also now available to use in
fields infested with Black
Root Rot. Any variety peanut
can be used since the
fumigant should destroy the
disease organism as well as
harmful nematodes.
A chemical fumigant treat
ment is expensive so a farmer
needs to know how much loss
he can expect in the field com
